Red Cross to hold fund-raising yard sale

The Greater Edisto Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a fund-raising yard sale on Saturday to help put a dent in the $310,000 it'll need this year to meet budget needs.

Everything from clothes and office supplies to antique bottles and furniture will be on sale during the event, which will be held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the City Gym on Broughton Street in Orangeburg.

"We have probably 200 families that have donated different items. It looks like we have everything from kitchen items to ... some furniture, clothes, great books and toys. We have a great variety of items," said Cindy Smith, executive director of the Greater Edisto Chapter of the ARC.

The yard sale is an initiative of the chapter's fund development committee.

Most of the money the chapter needs will still have to come from donations, Smith said.

"A little will be grants, and a little will be from our courses that we offer, but the majority has to come from donations," she said, noting that Orangeburg County Council has already allocated $25,000 to the chapter this year.

Swimming, CPR, first-aid and AED training are among the courses which the chapter offers for a fee to help people to become more knowledgeable about safety.

Smith said proceeds from the yard sale will be put to good use.

"Everything we raise from this event will be turned around and used in our disaster relief program locally. We count on the community to help us take care of the community," said Smith, noting that most disaster relief funds are used to help home fire victims.

For more information about Saturday's yard sale, call the local chapter office up until 5 p.m. today at 803-534-5735.
