Celebration to raise awareness of, need for programs directed toward the blind
Tuesday, October 09, 2007South Carolina State University will celebrate the 15th anniversary of its Blind Rehabilitation and Orientation Mobility Program at its fourth annual White Cane Day Celebration on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Focused on promoting awareness about the lives of the blind and visually impaired and the need for quality services to enhance their lives, the annual White Cane Day Celebration is sponsored by S.C. State's Orientation and Mobility Program and other agencies serving the needs of the blind and visually impaired.
As part of the program celebrating the visually impaired and their increased mobility of citizens in all aspects of American life, Angela B. Abraham, O.D., will deliver the day's keynote address.
The event will also feature other noted speakers in the field of blind rehabilitation, vision education partners for South Carolina, recognized leaders in the field of human services providing services to individuals with visual impairments, individuals with other disabilities, legislators and related parties.
S.C. State's Blind Rehabilitation/Orientation and Mobility Program was established in 1992 as the first graduate Blind Rehabilitation/Orientation and Mobility Program at a Historically Black College or University and remains the first and only program to offer joint credentials in orientation and mobility and rehabilitation counseling. The program has graduated more than 100 specialists in the field of blind rehabilitation who have successful contributing careers in education, administration, as well as local, state and federal government.
