GREENSBORO, NC -- Holly Hill native Javon Gilliard has resigned as the Athletic Director and head womens’ basketball coach at Bennett College.
Bennett finished with a 12-11 record last season.
Former O-W players honored
Coastal Carolina linebacker Derrick Frasier earned Big South Conference Football Freshman of the Week honors for games played during Week 6 (Oct. 6).
Also, wide receiver Brandon Benjamin was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Wide Receiver of the Week. Benjamin had nine receptions for a career best 130 yards and a touchdown against Virginia Union.
Frasier, who was a Shrine Bowl selection as a middle linebacker for the Orangeburg-Wilkinson Bruins a season ago, recorded a career-high 12 tackles in his first career start at Furman. On the opening drive, Frasier had a pair of tackles on second and third down to force the Paladins to try to convert a fourth down which failed. He also had a drive-ending tackle in the game and helped the defense give up a season-low total in rushing yards and passing yards by an opponent.
Claflin falls in volleyball
Columbia College defeated Claflin 30-28, 30-20, 30-21.
Leading the Pantherettes were Tashia Stewart and Shavonna Andrews with nine kills. Sheena Johnson had 12 assists, and Tatoria Montgomery had six digs. The Pantherettes travel to Salisbury, NC on Oct. 13 to take on Livingstone College.
Volleyball
Woodland takes 5-AA title
BYRDS -- Woodland took the Region 5-AA title with a 25-13, 25-15, 21-25, 25-22 win over Edisto.
Tequilla Allen and Angel Elmore each had 11 service points and 15 assists. Defensively, Heather Hill had 12 spikes, 13 assists and three kills; Sharetha Benefield had six spikes, seven blocks and six kills and Olivia Britt had four digs.
Woodland (12-6, 9-0) travels to Silver Bluff Thursday.
Clarendon Hall wins
SUMTER -- Clarendon Hall downed St. Francis 25-3, 25-19, 23-25, 24-26, 15-5.
Cassie Dantzler led Clarendon Hall with 28 points and nine aces; Sam Cila had 18 points and two aces; Preea Bivek had 17 points and four aces; Britney Irick had 16 points and three aces; Annabelle Bennett had 12 points; Kate McClary had 12 points; Hailey Miles had six points and three aces; Guerry Martin had two points and Jankie Patel had a point.
With the win Clarendon Hall improves to 13-3 overall.
Holly Hill Academy tops Calhoun Academy
ST. MATTHEWS -- The Lady Raiders (14-1,4-0) defeated the Lady Cavaliers in region play 25-14, 25-11, 25-9.
Meredith Jenkins had a team-high 10 kills, four digs and a block. Carlie Franklin contributed eight kills, six aces, and five digs. Wehme Carolyn Hutto had seven kills, four digs, and two blocks. Mary Auburn Shuler totaled six kills, six aces, and two blocks, and Victoria Way had 25 assists in the match.
Holly Hill’s JV team also won in three sets 22-25, 25-11, 25-11.
Britten Dafta came up with 10 digs and five aces. Kayla Crider posted seven aces and two kills. Merissa Becker chipped in with five aces and an assist.
The Lady Raiders will take on Colleton Prep on Thursday. The JV game will start at 4 p.m.
Lady Mohawks split tri-match with Cross and Baptist Hill
CROSS -- Bethune-Bowman (10-4,5-3) won its match against Baptist Hill 25-9, 25-11. Franchesca Hook led the Lady Mohawks with seven points and six aces. LaQuanda Williams also had seven points with three aces and three dinks, and Keyuana Thomas ended the match with six points and three aces.
Cross defeated Bethune-Bowman later in the tri-match 29-27, 25-21.
Mya Berry had seven pointss and three aces in the loss, and Jasmine Shuler had seven points with three spikes.
Bethune-Bowman will be in action on Tuesday at Branchville.
O-W splits tri-match against Goose Creek and Wando
The Lady Bruinettes (12-10) defeated Goose Creek 17-25, 28-26, 25-20.
Shameka Randolph led O-W with 14 points, three kills and three blocks; Janae Kearse came up with 12 points, four kills and three assists; Ronneshia Green had 10 points and four assists, and Janae Simmons had three blocks.
O-W was later defeated by Wando 25-10, 25-17. Green ended the match with six points. Shanice Byrd had five points. Simmons contributed four blocks and two kills.
The Lady Bruinettes also defeated Swansea on Monday 25-4, 25-12, 25-19.
O-W will host Stratford on Thursday. The JV team will begin at 5:30 and the varsity match will start at 6 p.m.
Branchville sweeps tri-match
CHARLESTON -- The Lady Yellow Jackets (14-4,7-1) won their first match against Military Magnet 25-7, 25-9. Branchville later defeated Academic Magnet 21-25, 25-20, 25-23.
The Jackets were down by 11 points in the third game against Academic Magnet. Thanks to the serving of KaAnn Murray and Austin Kinard, the Jackets were able to take the win.
Murray totaled 12 points, 19 assists and a kill in both matches. Kinard added 12 points, five digs and two kills. Kim Henderson ended the tri-match with 14 points, 11 aces and five assists; Julie Beeks had 11 points, four aces and five assists; Bethany Hughes contributed 10 points and eight aces, and Courtney Simmons came up with 15 kills and four blocks.
Branchville is in a two-way tie with Academic Magnet for the region lead. The Jackets will host a tri-match starting at 5:30 p.m. today against Scott’s Branch and Wade Hampton.
Orangeburg Christian sweeps Andrew Jackson
Orangeburg Christian took both matches of a doubleheader against Andrew Jackson on "Senior Night."
The first match was won by OCA in two games 25-8, 25-22. The second match was also won by OCA in two games 25-17, 25-22.
Laurie Lee led OCA with 14 points, eight kills and an ace. Kayla Brown added 12 points and two aces.
OCA will face Glenforest today at 5:30 p.m.
TENNIS
Local Pinewood Prep player wins three matches
MT.PLEASANT -- Holly Hill native Charmaine Bessent won her singles match for Pinewood Prep against Bishop England 3-6, 6-2 and 10-4. The Pinewood Prep team lost the match 7-2 which drops their record to 9-3.
Bessant and Pinewood Prep will be in action today at Ashley Hall starting at 4 p.m.
Lady Indians beat Laurence Manning
MANNING -- Orangeburg Prep (10-5,6-3) defeated Laurence Manning 7-2 in region play.
In singles, Amber Bryant defeated Maggie Brown 7-5, 7-5. Ragan McDonald defeated Kellie-Morgan Witherspoon 6-2, 6-2. Emily Black defeated Audrey Bagnal 6-4, 6-0. Barkley Stoudenmire defeated Lauren Stagner 6-0, 6-4.
In doubles, Bryant and Patterson won their match 8-5. Black and McDonald brought home an 8-2 victory, and Stoudenmire and Whitney Rhoad completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win.
The Lady Indians will host Thomas Sumter today at 3:30 p.m.
Benjamin’s longest reception was for a gain of 55 yards. He is currently ranked seventh among all CIAA receivers in receptions and 10th in receiving yards per game.
