Defeat hits SCSU quarterback especially hard

To a man, South Carolina State players went to the locker of quarterback Cleveland McCoy to console him.

A week earlier, the senior quarterback was riding high after carrying the Bulldogs to a first-ever victory at Hampton University. It was a performance head football coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough praised as one of the best of his career.

Fast forward to late Saturday afternoon at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium and McCoy found himself in a different emotional state.

"This is the worst day of my life," McCoy told a cameraperson following the 17-16 loss to 12th-ranked Delaware State.

Nearly 10 minutes earlier, McCoy made another big play which appeared put the Bulldogs in position of avenging last year’s 10-9 loss to the Hornets. On fourth down, McCoy showed the presence of mind by completing a 20-yard pass to Phillip Morris to keep the clock moving with less than four minutes remaining.

The jubilation from the play was quickly replaced by despair. While running on first and 20 following a holding penalty, McCoy had the football stripped away from him by free safety Ryan Robinson. In the ensuing scramble to make the recovery, defensive tackle Ron Spinner made the recovery at the SCSU 44.

Seven plays later, Gaertner booted a 38-yard field just inside the left goalpost with 2.6 seconds left to hand the Bulldogs a 17-16 Homecoming loss. Needless to say, a near teary-eyed McCoy was beyond consoling and left pondering about the latest lost opportunity to lead SCSU into the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

"That’s the wrong time to turn the football over," he said. "I’m supposed to make plays and not fumble the football. It’s rough."

McCoy’s football career has been a testament in resiliency in the face of setbacks. As a senior at Baptist Hill, he led the Bobcats to an undefeated regular season in 2002 only to get upset 14-13 by Estill in the opening round of the Class A playoffs.

Despite a 21-11 record over his four seasons in a starting role, McCoy has become more defined by the losses rather than the victories and the 110 percent effort he’s given on every play during his Bulldog career. Although numerous other factors went into those crushing losses to Coastal Carolina and Hampton in 2005, Delaware State last year and Norfolk State and the Hornets again this year, it still makes it hard for McCoy to accept his team coming up short for the outright championship again.

"We had the weapons this year," he said. "It’s always one play. Last year, we lost it by one point (to Delaware State). This year, we lost it by one point. Maybe the answer is one point. It’s just rough. It’s rough."

The fact that this was McCoy’s last chance to lead SCSU into the postseason for the first time in a quarter of a century made the loss even harder to swallow.

"It’s a hurtful feeling and that’s the sad thing," he said. "This is my last year. I can’t say we’ll get it again next year. We’ll always remember this. In high school, we lost by one point and it seems like it’s just something I can’t shake. I don’t know."

He especially felt bad for his head coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough, who has remained totally committed to him the past three seasons.

"Coach Pough put everything into me and you know ..." said McCoy before going silent.

The challenge now for McCoy and the seniors is to finish another November undefeated and create optimism for another season.

"The next game, I’m going to play," he said. "I’m going to finish the season out. We’ll go 7-4 and I’ll wish those guys the best next year."

" Soooooooooo, how exactly did Culpepper (265 lbs), David Garrard (265 lbs), Byron Leftwich (265lbs), Donovan McNabb (240 lbs), JaMarcus Russell (265 lbs) and et al make it these many years in the league and why are they still on rosters? BTW: the very same Grambling QB, Bruce Eugene was last reported to be on the practise roster w/the Tampa Bay Bucs and, at 260 lbs is the same size or smaller than the others . . . "

" Cleveland McCoy, what a catchy name for the Quarterback of SCSU. We love you man. You are a great player and you run as well or better that an old school quarterback named Nate Rivers, and he was very good. We Bulldog fans across the free world appreciate that you are our QB. Thanks man. My wife and I have 3 adult daughters and 4 adult sons. I believe your parents and friends appreciate and love you as much as we love and appreciate our kids. Son, keep up the great work that you have given all of us your fans over the past four years. Let's get it going! We'll see ya'll at Howard. DHBSR The State of Maryland has spoken! "

" Cleveland McCoy is one of the greatest quarterbacks to play for SCSU. McCoy needed some help after carrying the team on his back for most of the games. The best offensive plays were busted plays made good by Cleve. Poor Offensive Play calling has been the achilles of State the past three years. With games almost decided, WHY, wouldn't the coaches turn loose the BigDogs line and big backs to beat down the competition in the last 5,4,3 or 2 minutes left in the game. The quarterback had carried the team on his back all season, WHEN, JUST WHEN will the coaches do THEIR PART? Offensive Coordinator has been our link with Success, why put the success on One Man Shoulders???? Playing against 11. Our Coaching need to change with the Play Calling or Resignations should be the Call of the Day. The Alumni are content to have Coach Pough but even coach Pough need to admit too much pressure was put on Cleve's Back. We needed an Offensive Coordinator the Last Two Years. COMPETITION GOING FORWARD AND SCSU GOING BACKWARD AND HURTING PLAYERS!!! "

" McCoy shouldn't feel as bad as he does. He has been a very good competitor and representative of the University. McCoy must understand that some games are won by players predominately and some games are won by the coach predominately. Unfortunately, this game was won by the opposing coach primarily. Any Good Coach that has scouted SCSU football, would know that we can hurt you with our feet and not our arm. Therefore; all one needs to do is simply man up the corners and one safety for the tight end and blitz one backer or the remaining safety. It is not hard to stop a one dimensional offense. In order for SCSU to become champions of the MEAC conference we must develop a balanced attack on offense (running and passing). Boise State beat the Univ. of Oklahoma at the end when everything counted, because they were UNPREDICTABLE!!! Oklahoma by far, had the better atheletes, but Boise State's Coach however was the "X" factor that leveled the playing field for his team. I wish McCoy well in his future endeavors but it is time to start developing Mr.Long. I also believe it shows "Class" when we our Coaching Staff displays signs of "Humbleness" in the public's eye!!! There is a difference between Confidence and Arrogance. After 3 "Super Bowl Wins," Tom Brady and his Coach remains humble; That is a sign of "Class!" "

" I agree with many of the comments posted on here. One mistake should not erase an OK career as a Bulldog for McCoy. The question for Bulldog fans and Coach Pough and his staff should be: "How do we measure success in football at SCSU?" In any organization, goals are set at the beginning of the fiscal year, calendar year, or in this case, football season. Have any of the goals been met during Pough's tenure? One thing I do disagree with is the comment by Pough and one comment posted on here. First, you do not build a team for the future by not allowing future stars to get an opportunity to play. Even though it sounds great to say, "I'm planning for future MEAC championships and playoff games," the actions have always shown to play for THIS SEASON. And in fact, you should. However, don't use the cliche when goals are not met to hide the "brutal truth." Lastly, talent does not win championships. (I've heard that too many times this football season.) Taking care of the little things does. For example; using the clock wisely, being penalized less, not turning over the ball, kicking field goals that are in range, using timeouts wisely, using the no huddle offense to your advantage (snapping the ball when the defenders on running on and off the field) and simply "THINKING." Those are the small things that add up to making sure championships are won. You get no consolation prize for "competing every year for a conference championship." Many of the fans are content with this "G.H. Syndrome"= Gonna Happen. Until we TAKE CARE OF THE SMALL STUFF, the big stuff like the MEAC championship and the playoffs would continue to have us "waiting until next season." Nonetheless, I still support Bulldog Football, but we must face the facts. Every year from now on will be more difficult because of the rising lower level teams of the past playing better and making proper adjustments. "

" Well the season is lost, player for player we have the best team in the MEAC. We are not able to score inside the red zone because we have a one dimensional quarterback, teams can predict on defense what we are going to do inside the red zone. McCoy has to realize you win the game by not trying to be a hero, you win by being a thinker, fall down when you feel the contact is coming, Football and basketball are a thinking man's sport. We have very talented recievers but a quarterback that is unable to fully utilize them by getting them the ball. Malcolm has the arm, I think it is now time to use him more for the remainder of the season. "

" McCoy's record speaks for itself. He is a great kid and it realy hurt's to see him hurting like this. What we as true fans of SCSU need to do is show up and show him and the entire team just how much we support them. How many other teams can truthfully say they have been in the chase for the chapionship for 4 years. Not many and I would bet that there are many fans who wish they could say this about thier team. "

" McCoy is a warrior....The coaches should be ashamed of the inability to put that young man in a position to utilizes his strengths....He is an option QB not a pocket passer........Blackwell should be fired because of he stays around we will never win the MEAC title outright and go to the playoffs.... "

" MCCoy gave 115% effort on the field. He should be proud because he is a wonderful player. He needed more help to win some of the tougher games. Hey lead Dawg keep your head up and go out with some more wins. The bulldogs fans have your back and we are proud of SCSU and our team...WOOF, WOOF woof woof wo wo w .... we never die..just multiply "

" Unbelievable!!! You know how good teams find a way to win. This team time after time finds new ways to lose. However it's a team lost. You can say the kicker has got to make that kick. But knowing us we would have let Del St. score a TD anyway. You could say Cleve shouldn't have fumbled, but then you can say Defense stop them four and out. But Cleve can't fumble in that instance. That's 2 I've counted in bad situations. Remember Winston Salem on the 1 yard line. J Woods fumbled against Hampton to give them another shot. We don't play the game from our necks up. I don't know if that's coaching or what. All I know is against Hampton at the end when Will Ford fell down the ESPNU guys said great play for him to just fall there and run clock. Come to find out he had a cramp. So even when people think we are playing with our heads we aren't. If ESPN was around we might win. Cleve you got to fall down and just go down. That way at least 35-40 seconds is running off the clock, and we still get to punt. Watch us win the rest because we are relaxed and then it won't matter. And Howard did your dirty work for you and you still choke. Now you have to play Long just see what he has. I see Cleve wants to play, but you don't want Long starting next year with very little game experience. I just hope he is watching as to how tough the MEAC is and that he needs to stop eating fried chicken, burgers, fries, and hot dogs. We may need to hire a dietician so that Long will get into shape. Not because I want him to help SCSU win games, but because for every pound he is overweight, that $50,000 dollars his family is losing in NFL money. ESPN compared him to Grambling's QB and he was fat. The saints told him he was just too big to make their team. Don't do like Stanley Roberts(from SC) as he ate his way out of the NBA. Bulldog basketball-I need a win at the Colonial Center to get over this one. SCSU for Life$ "
