Council will sell land once slated for criminal justice center
By DIONNE GLEATON, T&D Staff Writer Friday, November 02, 2007SANTEE - The Santee Town Council took s.jpg in a special called meeting Wednesday afternoon to sell four acres of land that were initially going to be used for a criminal justice center/police station.
The council gave first-reading approval, by title only, to the sale of the land in accordance with the terms of its contract with Santee-based Wappoo Business Park Inc.
"The offer was very good. This is town-owned land that we had bought ... with the intention of originally putting a criminal justice center there. We changed our mind about the location," Santee Town Councilwoman Shirley Upton said Thursday.
Town attorney William H. Johnson of Johnson, McKenzie & Robinson LLC in Manning said he didn't know much about Wappoo, including where it's based, other than it was "an entity that's made an offer on that property."
And, it's not clear how the property will be used.
"We don't really know exactly what the uses are. It's a developer, and we don't know specifically the plans," said Johnson, who said second reading of the ordinance will be made during the regularly scheduled council meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 7.
Santee Mayor Silas Seabrooks said Thursday the property is located in front of the Food Lion in the Centre Pointe development complex.
In other business Wednesday, the council approved authorizing Seabrooks to sign a letter, which Johnson will draft, to confirm Sixth District Congressman Jim Clyburn's use of office space at the Santee Cultural Arts Center. The letter will also outline the terms of usage.
The next Santee Town Council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Santee Town Hall.
