Native American Pow-Wow set for Nov. 9-10 on Croatan land

The Seventh Annual Native American Gathering Pow-Wow started Friday and will continue on Saturday, Nov. 10.

The event is under way on the Croatan Tribal property at 1197 Lake Edisto Road in Orangeburg and is being sponsored by the Croatan Indian People of Orangeburg County, tourism grants and local merchants.

Croatan Chief Ricky "Running Wolf" Bruner said, "The Pow-Wow is really like a family reunion more than a carnival. There will be arts and crafts for sale and demonstrations. But one of the main purposes of a pow-wow is to allow all Native American people to come together for a few days and share their heritage and to learn from each other."

This year's special guest will be Rick Youngblood, a professional wrestler and a member of the Cherokee Tribe, he said.

"We will also host two hoop dancers and our host drum will be Dry Creek Medicine. The Head Lady will be Melissa Creel, and the Head Man will be Jeffie Kornstat. Our emcee will be James Spotted Hawk, and our Arena Director is Alan Byars. Of course, Silver and his white wolf, Kilo, will be here as well. In the past, we have hosted some amazing pow-wows, and I think this is going to be one of our best. I extend an invitation to everyone to come and join us. This is our opening event for celebrating November as Native American Heritage Month."

The Pow-Wow will feature $1,000 worth of prizes for registered dancers, with prizes being awarded every hour both days. A Native Auction will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday. In addition, a number of children's games and skills contests will be featured including bow and arrow, hatchet throw, three-legged race, corn toss, and potato dance.

Admission for the event is $3.00 per person ages 3 and older. There is no charge for parking an RV or pitching a tent during the Pow-Wow. However, no pets will be allowed.

For additional information, contact Bruner at 803-378-5328.
