Top-ranked Calhoun County to host Scott's Branch tonight

ST. MATTHEWS - The first potential roadblock in top-ranked Calhoun County's "March to History" pays a visit tonight to the two-time defending Class A boys' basketball champions.

Looking to snap the Saints' 50-game winning streak is second-ranked Scott's Branch (3-0) which has won its first three games by an average of 21,5 points. The Eagles also own a victory this season over a returning defending champion with Tuesday's 59-40 victory over Class 2-A title-holder Lee Central.

On the same night, Calhoun County (1-0) opened the season with a 70-46 victory over Allendale-Fairfax. The Saints pulled away early using their fullcourt pressure to set up numerous transition points, with Alshon Jeffrey leading the way with 19 points, followed by younger brother Shamir and David Glover with 15 points each.

Despite the lopsided win, head coach Zam Fredrick is hoping to see his team improve on their offensive execution facing an Eagles' team which also employs fullcourt pressure.

A victory by Calhoun County would leave it four shy of tying the S.C. High School League modern-day record of 55 set from 1996-98 by Great Falls. The Saints are currently 16 shy of breaking the all-time mark of 65 set by Hannah from 1957-60.

The "One Versus Two" boys matchup in St. Matthews will take place following the 6:30 p.m. girls' matchup between seventh-ranked Calhoun County (1-0) and winless Scott's Branch (0-3).

A trio of 3-0 T&D Region teams also looking to remain undefeated tonight include the third-ranked Orangeburg-Wilkinson girls who travel to Fort Dorchester, the Woodland girls who will meet Bethune-Bowman and the Swansea boys' who will meet North.

Both the Bruinettes and Lady Wolverines will also see action Saturday against Region 8-AAAA foes Beaufort and Colleton County, respectively.
