Ending weeks of speculation and rumors, the South Carolina State University Board of Trustees voted to oust President Dr. Andrew Hugine, Jr. during a Tuesday afternoon telephone conference.

Acting on the motion of trustee Lumus Byrd, the board voted not to renew the contract of its ninth president, which expires in June 2008. The board also agreed to immediately place Hugine on administrative leave, with his last day scheduled to be Jan. 4, 2008.

Byrd said Hugine’s contract should not be renewed because of his performance evaluation and an academic review of the university conducted by the Education Commission of the States.

Hugine did not comment following the vote.

Trustee Col. John Bowden said that he would tender his resignation on that same day if the board accepted Byrd’s motion. Board Vice Chairman Jonathan Pinson, Charles Williams and Bowden voted against the motion.

" at least 3 members of the board of trustees should be allowed to be from outside the state of SC. Currently, only residents of SC can run for Board Seats. This excludes many many SCSu alumni and corporate friends from joining the board. For a school that wants to grow its regional influence to not allow people from taht region to run for a seat is sad "

" As a graduate of this institution. I'm very disappointed on how this matter was handled. I'm not for or against Hugine being removed. I do believe that everything should always be properly done and not under the table. I just believe that the Alumni's and the public deserved to know what President Hugine had done wrong for him to be removed from office. I would hate to to think that it was a personal vendetta between the Board chair and President Hugine. Unless, it's explained to me I beleive as well as many other Alumni's that Hugine was the person to move us to the next level. I was at Homecoming this past year and I was amazed at all of the develpoment going on at my Alma Mater. I was also amazed to see the 101 take it place back at the top as the best band in the land. I was proud to be at the Falcons game when the 101 receive a standing ovation. I'm very, very proud of my school. But, I'm also ashame of my school as I type this letter in my office. We have to understand that it's not just the President position to move us to the next level. It's also the responsibility of the Board. The Board should consists of people with financial clout to move us to the next level and bring in funds that we desperatly need. My belief is that the Board should not consist of just graduates of SC State. If we are going to start a new. I beleive that some of the board members should resign. But, until that happens I don't think that it would be in the best interest of the school that Col Bowden resign his position. We need level headed people that will speak up for what is right and have our best interest at heart. We are Loyal sons and daughters and I'm a BULLDOG FOR LIFE...but, again...I'm disappointed. "

" The process by which Dr. Hugine was ousted was embarassing. This Board has discredited itself with their less than candid conduct. The sad thing is that the Board did not have the decency to disclose in public their discontent with Dr. Hugine. Instead, they chose to act under the cover of darkness thereby disgracing both the University and themselves. Have you no shame? "

" I hope the board of trustees understand how they have portrayed SCSU in the past weeks. It is appalling that SCSU has board of idiots running the show. I was a student from 1996-2001, and lived through the South Campus incident, was the beloved Leroy Davis fired??? I think not...Washington Dining Hall held an infamous smell for weeks due a sewage leak beneath the dining hall and even failed the state food health inspection with a large red "C" on the front door. Dr. Hugine will be SCSU's loss, but another institutions gain. A. Sullivan Gwinnett County, GA SCSU 2001 "
