Littering is big problem

I have been a resident of the Cordova area for three years and I'm really fed up with the way people who live in this area "trash" the roadways. It seems the common mentality around here is that it's far easier to roll your window down and throw your trash outside than to take it home or to a dump site.

If you don't believe it, just take a drive down Cannon Bridge road toward Bamberg. As soon as you pass the "Cox Lumber" and "Albemarle" properties, it begins, and continues for miles.

Public awareness of the problem might make a little difference, but I doubt it.

The only thing that might have a lasting affect on the problem would be for the municipalities involved -- Orangeburg, Cordova, Bamberg, etc. -- to invoke "stiff" penalties and fines for littering similar to the "state" laws that govern the interstate highways.

If people are faced with paying a $500 fine for throwing their bottles or fast-food trash out the window, it just might make a difference.
