Stories of local interest in winter edition of 'Sandlapper' magazine

Check out the latest winter edition of the "Sandlapper." The "Magazine of South Carolina" has a decidedly local flavor.

Not only does the front cover feature a photo from the gardens of Karen and Charles Williams, but two feature articles showcase Calhoun County's 100th anniversary and celebrated batik artist, Dr. Leo Twiggs.

The Calhoun County article, with text and photographs by Daniel E. Harmon, covers the wide range of monthly activities planned for the year-long 2008 celebration. A calendar of events is provided.

Photographs show both the historic restored courthouse and the dilapidated Fort Motte Jail, the oldest public building in the county. Two of the rural county's agricultural staples, peanuts and cotton, are pictured as well as items from the Calhoun County Museum and Cultural Center.

The feature story on Twiggs, distinguished artist in residence at Claflin University and a former art professor at South Carolina State University, profiles his life from his boyhood in St. Stephen to the one-man show he held during the fall at his alma mater. Written by Margaret N. O'Shea, the article also examines Twiggs' art, based on the ancient craft of batik. The Claflin exhibit continues through Jan. 15.

Then, there's the cover of the Sandlapper, a close-up photograph by Lynne Branham of the statue, "Looking Homeward" from the Williams' gardens outside of Orangeburg on U.S. 301 North.

The Sandlapper can be found locally at Sandlapper Publishing Inc. and Thoughts-N-Things Gift Shop, both in Orangeburg, and, at Brooker Inc. in Denmark.

" Ft motte jail looks a lot more fragile today than in this picture. County should either restore it or tear it down and save the footstone. Leaving it to rot is a sign of an uninterested community. We have enough of these kinds of signs in Calhoun
County already.
