S.C. State names presidential search committee - Lt. Gov., former education chief members; VP Rolle reassigned

South Carolina State trustees during a special meeting Wednesday named 15 officials to the search committee that will help select the university's 10th president.

Board Chairman Maurice Washington will serve as chair of the presidential search committee. Originally, the committee was set to have 11 members but was expanded.

S.C. State National Alumni President Patricia Lott said she takes offense to the manner in which the members were named. She said it has been a custom for the board to contact the national alumni associated president with the selections made for a presidential search committee. She said that didn't happen this time.

Citing her status as an ex-officio member of the board with a good attendance record, Lott said she should have been contacted out of respect for her office.

"The chairman said he wants everything to be transparent. I feel I should have been notified," Lott said.

The committee was created to help find a replacement for Dr. Andrew Hugine, who trustees removed last month. While Hugine's contract was set to expire in June, trustees voted to place him on administrative leave until his last day, Jan. 4.

The board selected Dr. Leonard McIntyre to be the interim president.

Trustees Earl Bridges, Lumus Byrd and Reggie Gallant will join Washington on the search committee. Byrd will be the vice chair of the committee.

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, former State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum, and state Reps. Leon Howard, D-Richland, and Lonnie Hosey, D-Allendale, were tapped to be on the committee. Hosey, director of the university's Adult and Continuing Education program, is representing university staff.

Other members of the committee include: S.C. State Faculty Senate President Dr. Evelyn Fields, Student Government Association President Jeremy Rogers, retired Col. Ned Felder of the National Alumni Association, James C. Hampton of the Board of Visitors, Randy Snell of Zeus Industries and Carole Cato, who is the community representative.

State Rep. Jerry Govan, D-Orangeburg, said the members are all quality people. Govan is an S.C. State alumnus who has spoken against the board's decision to remove Hugine.

"I think certainly they are competent. I know they will give their best as part of their responsibilities," Govan said. However, he does have a problem with the way the board handled Lott's involvement.

Govan said he was surprised and disappointed Lott was not picked to be a part of the search committee. He believes the fact she was not consulted or contacted shows a lack of respect for protocol and may even be viewed by some as retaliation by the board against her.

On Dec. 6, Lott and other alumni questioned the board about rumors that it wanted to oust Hugine. That day, Lott posed 10 questions to the board about Hugine's future at S.C. State.

The committee will have the task of conducting interviews, arranging on-campus visits and generating a list of finalists for the board's consideration. The board has set July 2008 as a target date to have a new president in place.

Howard said the next president must demonstrate great leadership that can move the university forward and an ability to interact with the community.

Washington said, "I am excited about working and interacting with this awesome group of diverse, dynamic individuals. Their varied backgrounds and expertise will assist the board with ide.jpgying and ultimately appointing the next president."

The board also decided that future audits should focus on contracts relative to the board in response to state Sen. Robert Ford's allegations of improprieties.

Washington said future audits will examine accounts and contracts made by the board to clear up any doubts.

"We value the transparency of the governing body," he said.

However, Ford said that the move is too little, too late. He said his biggest complaint is that S.C. State is not being run like a business and that the public money it receives is not respected and monitored properly.

Ford alleges that contracts are given out to companies and people that have friendly relationships with trustees without a bidding process.

"There's no way USC and Clemson would do that kind of thing, You don't see those things at other institutions," he said.

Stating the board's declaration sounds halfway decent, Ford said an audit is not necessary because he can obtain what he wants to know by filing a Freedom of Information Act request. He said that on Jan. 9, he will file that request with the office of president and board of trustees.

Also on Wednesday, the university announced that Vice President of Student Services Dr. Kevin Rolle has been reassigned to teach in the Education Leadership program in the School of Graduate Studies.

"It's a new administration moving in a different direction," McIntyre said of the move.

Rolle came to S.C. State in 2004 from Maryland Eastern Shore University, where he was the associate vice president for institutional advancement, chief development officer and instructor in the organizational leadership degree program.

Rolle and Hugine were questioned heavily by trustees in August regarding the university's failure to have adequate housing ready for the largest incoming freshman class in its history.

The university also announced McIntyre appointed Dr. Learie Luke, former interim chairman for the Department of Social Sciences, and Dr. Christine Boone, former chairwoman for the social work department, to be interim associate vice presidents of academic affairs.

" DZIFYI... You speak with sense and I love the quote. I will have to start using it. The reality is that though evil doers seem to prosper now, the time will come when the cup of God’s patience will be replaced with the cup of wrath. The bible assures us that a day is coming when justice will be delivered to those who did not repent. Evil doers will be punished. Let us all diligently strive to be right with Him before the day of the Lord comes.

" Dear bsponge14, yes I agree that all of us will have to face that Great Day of Judgement, one day. But until that day, I demand JUSTICE right now. One day,one hour, one minute, even one second is too long to wait for Justice!! Yes the "evil doers" will always prosper. The sun shines equally on the just & the unjust. But I, shall not be moved nor deterred from Justice. To quote the character Sophia from one of my favorite books, movies, & musicals, The Color Purple... "You better think about heaven later & beat Mister's (the evil doers) head in.." today! "

" I am not sure why Dr. Hugine was realesed. I believe he was trying to clean house & rid the university of employees that were there only to benefit themselves. It's possible that one of these individuals was a friend with a member of the BOT. I am truly disgusted with Maurice Washington. He should be removed from the BOT. His actions are underhanded & selfish. I believe that he is still upset about failing to oust Sen. Robert Ford from his senate seat in 2004!!! There are rumors that the BOT want a Puppet Head for a president!Just like with former president Dr. Hatton, the powers that "wannabe" do not want progress or change.Especially if it means that this change loosens their stranglehold on SCSU As far as Dr. Kevin Rolle, he needs to be FIRED!! (1) he has "mishandled" money (2) during his tenure he rarley attended student meetings or activities, which is unacceptable for VP of Student Affairs. I am not sure who is at fault in regards to the housing fiasco back in August, but I do know that Dr. Rolle was hardly around to assist the students & their parents. The blood sucking, mismanaged, & inept managers of SODEXHO waited until mid September to clean, repair,& open Earle Hall for some of the homeless students. This company is a greedy monopoly that is nickle & diming the students & the university into bankruptcy. Students caught their employees taking items out of the new residence hall, which they in turn sold back to the university when the items were ordered for another building!! The food service is too expensive,
repairs are botchy & slow. This company can be found @ almost every university, hospital, hotel & prison across the US. SODEXHO, needs to be investigated, fined, & dismantled! "

" As an SCSU student & a Charleston native, I am not sure what is going on. It seemed to me that Dr. Hugine was doing a great job. I know that he was "cleaning house" & getting rid of employees that were not benefiting the University. As for Dr. Rolle, he did not appear to really care about the students. During his tenure he rarely attended student meetings or activities. I am not sure who is at fault in regards to the housing issue, but I do know that SODEXO played a major role in NOT getting the dorms like Earle Hall ready for the influx of students. SODEXO is nickle & diming the students & university to death!!! As for Maurice Washington he seems to be underhanded & is looking for a PUPPET for a President. I believe he is still upset about losing his bid for Sen. Robert Ford's senate seat in 2004! "

" Come judgement day it won't matter who made the smartest business decision. At least the students, Lott and Ford can walk away with integrity for standing for that which is right. While it may seem the evil doers have had their way, we all will have a higher judge to answer to and His wrath will be much greater than any reprimand that we the people can issue. "

RE: "robert ford was the person who wanted more tickets to attend usc and sc state football game."

Why would you lie like that? Your comment makes it sound like he personally wanted more tix when , in fact, he simply desired for SCSU to get a larger allotment of tickets.

And, supporter:
It is simply proper, professional protocol to have the duely and fairly elected President of the National Alumni Association actively involved in this upcoming process.

To do otherwise is unprofessional and, as the article states, this has the classic earmarks of retaliation.

At a minumim, it's saying to the alumni: you don't count and we couldn't care less about you! . . . "

" Another example of dumbness. No competent board would exclude the National Alumni President. Stevie Wonder can see what’s happening here with Felder from Charleston. "

" This is not about Ms. Lott, this is about respect given to the SCSUNAA. Usually, the president, or his/her designee sits on the Search Committee. Mr. Washington has muddied the water again. With him as the head of the search committee and his followers i.e. Byrd and Fields, I can't help but be leery of the results. This is based on past performance. "

" south carolina students and community please do not listen to what robert ford has to say or patricia lott, these two people just want things their way.patricia has never been a team player, and robert ford was the person who wanted more tickets to attend usc and sc state football game.he made all kinds of accursations in the news papers about usc.dont listen to neither people,go maurice go,continue to do your best. "

" Ms. Lott obviously don't know what day it is. You need to know when to hold and when to fold in this business. The train is clearly leaving the track - either you get on board or you are "left behind". She is clearly being cast as a spoiler. In the end, she will be left out there by herself - neither Rep. Govan or the T & D can or will save her. A word to the wise... "
