SCSU BOT talked to former general about president's job

Retired Major General Clifford Stanley has been engaged in informal discussions with South Carolina State University trustees about becoming the university's 10th president.

While declining to directly comment on the situation, Stanley said Friday through his secretary Susan Ponwith that no formal discussions have taken place between him and the board.

"They've been very informal," Ponwith said of the talks.

SCSU Board Chairman Maurice Washington said it is hard to say if any board members have approached Stanley about the position. Washington said he has not contacted Stanley himself, but stated Stanley is the kind of candidate that SCSU would like to attract.

"I would love to have him interested," Washington said.

The retired Marine Corps general is a 1969 graduate of S.C. State College and holds a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University. He is president of Scholarship America, a Minnesota-based company that helps prospective college students receive financial aid and support.

He was among the finalists for the president's position at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette in December, although someone else was ultimately selected. Stanley previously served as executive vice president at the University of Pennsylvania.

Stanley serves as vice chairman of the SCSU Foundation Board of Directors.

Earlier this week, SCSU trustees selected 15 people to serve on the university's presidential search committee. Trustees removed former president Dr. Andrew Hugine last month, placing him on administrative leave until his last day, which was Friday.

SCSU trustee Charles Williams said Washington mentioned Stanley as possible candidate some time before trustees decided not to renew Hugine's contract.

State Rep. Jerry Govan, an SCSU alumnus, said he and other lawmakers first heard rumors back in August that Stanley was going to be SCSU's next president.

Washington said that he and trustee Col. John Bowden, who resigned from the SCSU board Friday to protest Hugine's removal, had a conversation about Stanley in the presence of Williams late last year. Washington said Bowden expressed admiration for Stanley during the conversation, but there was no discussion of making Stanley SCSU's next president.

Washington said he met Stanley once a year ago and even seemed to have trouble recalling the general's name during a phone interview Friday, accidently referring to Stanley once as "Charles Austin," the Columbia city manager. He said that he saw Stanley at the national alumni convention in Orangeburg last year, but did not get a chance to speak to him.

Washington said trustees' conversations with Stanley do not circumvent the presidential search process.

Meanwhile, Williams questioned why the university is spending money on a national search firm when trustees are already talking to Stanley.

"I imagine Stanley's already got the job," said Williams, who also plans to resign from the board once the General Assembly convenes next week. Williams was one of three trustees who voted against the decision not to renew Hugine's contract and has indicated strong support for the former president several times.

In addition to the 15-member presidential search committee, the board tapped the Washington D.C. firm Academic Search to assist in the presidential selection process.

Washington said the firm will use several avenues to gather a pool of applicants, including seeking recommendations from the search committee and trustees. He said it is trustees' obligation to assist in identifying qualified candidates and therefore it is not inappropriate to contact possible candidates.

State Sen. John Matthews, also an alumnus, disagreed, saying that such an action would be inappropriate.

State Rep. Leon Howard, named to the SCSU presidential search committee earlier this week, does not believe such discussions are inappropriate unless the board convened officially on the matter.

Howard recalled a personal experience when he served as chairman of the Richland School District 1 board. He said when the district was looking for a new superintendent, people called him and suggested potential candidates.

Washington said that Stanley was suggested as a possible interim president to the board by a group called the Wrighten Law Society. That group advocates the return of a law school to SCSU's campus.

" fhsmct, believe me when I say there were NO “down play” intended in my comments regarding Gen. Stanley. I expressed an opinion in my writings and thus far, nothing you or any of the other writers have written here has changed those opinions. However, I think you made my point quite well with your list (abbreviated I’m sure) of Gen. Stanley’s accomplishments. While your list outlined many outstanding experiences and accomplishments, with the exception of his brief (approx. 12 months) stay at Penn, what on this list qualifies him to lead an institution of higher learning? If SCSU were preparing all of its students for the military or war strategies…Gen. Stanley would be high on my list. As well, he would also be high on my list to become a ranking member (such as VP for Executive and Military Affairs-with specific emphasis on trouble-shooting and other operational issues) of our next president’s management team. fhsmct, just so you’ll understand the difference, my comments here are just opinions and not “statements of fact.” I’m sure that a person such as General Stanley needs neither you nor I to defend his credentials and accomplishments. So, to avoid the possibility of further down playing (your opinion) his “particulars,” I will say no more FOR, and/or AGAINST him. However, I do wish you well and I do hope that your defense of this BOT and Gen. Stanley serves you well. Hope you get that job, promotion or another free game ticket. "

" Supporter, why is it so important to you to justify what this incompetent board is doing? We all see the urgent stance to have a republican at the helm of SCSU to complete their presidential selection process. You act as though we are un-educated and cannot understand what is happening. We realize that the real issues are larger than what has been written in the news. Grow up !!! We are capable of making up our own minds. "

" tas:
do your homework BEFORE attempting to down play Cliff's particulars.

Among other things, in the latter years:

Brigadier General Clifford L. Stanley served as the Director of Public Affairs, Headquarters Marine Corps;

MGEN Cliff Stanley was a White House Fellow from 1989-90, subsequently served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Personnel Policy

Then, as Deputy commanding general of the Combat Development Command, at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., he had responsibility for the development and implementation of policies and programs for the training and education of all Marine Corps personnel.

After retiring, he served as Executive vice president and chief operating officer at the University of Pennsylvania before moving on to his current position.

Now, please rationally explain how those professional experiences are limited to planning for war versus preparation for doing greater things in higher education? . . .

" To clarify, the point I tried to make is that a search committee's work should not be impacted by the circulation of potential candidates for a position. And, in fact, the sharing of names of potential candidates, as in the case of Andrew Card, is a good thing whether it is before or after an announcement. Further, since Dr. Sorensen announced a retirement rather than a forced resignation, a name for his replacement prior to his announcement would not have been possible or unlikely. Do you see my point? "

TAS wrote on Jan 7, 2008 10:27 AM:

" Hey Supporter, you made a key point in your writing, "After the president of University of South announced his retirement, the Board of Trustees immediately dropped the name of Andrew Card." The key word here is "AFTER." Do you recall that several folks have stated that Gen. Stanley's name was mentioned as early as October 2007? Many of us are SCSU supporters as well, and we will support the next president, but we are just not current BOT supporters. I think there maybe a few trust issues here don't you? "

" This is getting more and more disgusting with each article. Please T&D, stop giving this group of bumbling idiots the attention they are so desperately seeking. I am sure Mr. Stanley is an outstanding individual with great leadership abilities, but planning a war ain't the same as running an institution of higher learning. Please BOT don’t micro-manage the search firm, let them do the job they are hired to do….such a thing make sense, especially since we’re paying them. "

" After the president of University of South announced his retirement, the Board of Trustees immediately dropped the name of Andrew Card who worked at high levels in the Bush administration and a graduate of USC, as a serious candidate. It wasn't an issue. The Board chair merely said they wished he would apply and that he would be a strong contender. The search committee had not met. Why is it a problem for Clifford Stanley. Does everything African Americans do have a ring of abnolmacy? "

" Given the scrunity that the board is under by the news media and alumni, I am sure they will allow the presidential search process to be conducted in a fair and equitable manner. Please let them do that and stop trying to analyze every rumor or move that they make. I am really tired of hearing the negative comments. Charles Williams need to resign and stop trying to boost his political clout. He doesn't care what happens at SCSU. As a dedicated member of the SCSU family, I know there was definitely a need for a change in the leadership there. For obvious reasons, the board can't give you details of all the aspects of poor leadership. The academic aspects of the University(and I'm not referring to the report that was issued), which should be the primary focus of the school, was basically ignored. Perhaps the termination could have been done differently and would have if others had not gotten involved, but Hugine terminated many people in the exact same way during his presidency. You have to know how to manage people (which he didn't) and be careful how you treat them. "

" This is just another example of incompetency by this board. While Stanley may be a great choice for the President, the board has totally marred the process and its integrity will always be in question.

OK, maybe its time for the chairman to resign for the good of your school. What are the chances of him doing the honorable thing?
