Voter Voices: Cordova residents contemplating choices

By T&D StaffTuesday, January 15, 2008

With the South Carolina Presidential Primary and Caucus approaching for Republicans Jan. 19 and Democrats Jan. 26, it's time for South Carolinians to narrow down their choices.

Here's what a few residents in Cordova said about themselves as voters and what they're looking for in a candidate.

Mary Rickenbaker, who's been voting for the past 30 years, is looking for specific characteristics in a presidential candidate which may come in a Democrat or Republican.

"Basically, someone who has good moral values, good character, who's interested in the future of our country and basically in our children and education," Rickenbaker said when asked what type of presidential candidate she's looking for.

"For the last few years I have voted Republican, but I'm thinking about possibly changing that because there's a Democratic candidate or two that I think might be good for this country," she said.

Megan Gramling was a first-time voter in the last presidential election, and the party she chooses typically depends on the candidates' issues. In the last election she voted Democratic but this year, she's undecided.

"I'll be honest with you, I really don't know because I haven't really heard all of the debates going on," Gramling said when asked who she's voting for in the upcoming presidential election. "I'm looking for someone who can help with the health insurance, to bring our boys home, and that's willing to help the economy."

Juanita Ritchie, who's looking forward to changes in health care and help for those overcome by poverty, knows exactly who she's voting for in the upcoming Primary.

"I'm voting for Hillary because I think she's the one for the job," she said. "I think she's got the experience and the durability, because she stood by her husband when he was in office, and I think she'll make a good president.

" What's the matter you shadowed Democrats? Truth is truth and you don't want to debate the issue in your comments because you know it's true. If a Democrat is elected into office, no matter who it is, watch your wallet shrink and watch your jobs go away because of illegal amnesty. The writing is on the wall. Know the issues at hand and who will best represent this country for all. Vote with your mind that God gave you not because of personality and you will make it better for this country as a whole not for one. "

" You guys are laughable....look at what voting your knowledge has gotten you the last 7 years. Of course you are all voting republican regrdless of the issues. But I am sure that you are excited by the way the country is being ran today and for the last 7 years. Get over yourself already. This country needs a change of direction, and that starts with the leadership. I do however, agree with your last statement; people should vote with knowledge instead of stupidity. The only thing about that is this; you will be disappointed in the decisions that are made.

It is truly time that we as a country get away from the same ol song and dance that has gotten this country in the predicament that it is in today. No more Bush and No more Clinton.
These 2 families have been controlling our lives for almost 20 years, and enough is enough!

Everyone has a right to vote, and vote their own conscious, not yours and not mine. To want someone to vote for a particular party just for the sake of voting for a party is irresponsible and dangerous. That kind of thinking is why we are where we are today. So I ask you to do your part and just encourage people to vote.

If you don't like the democrats or republicans, and have such great ideas, run for public office and bring about change. As the old saying goes, its better to have remain silent and just be thought of as a fool.......

Its insane to degrade a political party just because it is a political party. I no longer have to wonder why our society is the way it is, the reasons appear before me on a daily basis.

Enuff Said!

" Can you say taxes? That's what you're going to get when you vote democrat, after all where are they going to get the money to support the $30 billion housing crisis, doling out $1,000 dollars per-family tax credit, and a $25 billion home heating grant for poor folks. Not to mention a universal health plan that will cost middle class Americans billions if not trillions of dollars. From your hard earned money my friend. Don't fool yourself, Democrats have an agenda. Why do think the Democrats haven't mentioned anything about illegal immigration? They have an agenda. Open your eyes and vote with knowledge not with stupidity. "

" There are plenty of good Republican candidates but I am not sure any will stand a chance with Americans being ready to get the Republicans out of office. "

"

Agree on the lack of substance in candidates.

Should old folks get vouchers from education taxation to pay for meds? Should couples with no children get a voucher from education funds to train their poodle?

" I did read your response, and while well crafted, it was more of utopian theory than practical thought. "

" While stereotyping can be a useful tool, specifically in identifying terrorists, you have missed your mark with me. I have yet to decide on a candidate, probably because I am interested in substance, and so far I haven't seen ANY. "

It is called the times and DEMOCRAT.

Should be called the scsu news letter.
You will vote for Fred Thompson if my stereotyping of you is accurate. Am I right?

P.S. Did you look at my last response to your pro vouchers for private education comments? (Advanced search "governor defers" 2 weeks back)

" Once again the T&D brings another liberal biased report. I certainly hope the democratic party is paying for all of this advertising. "
