AARP in cooperation with the IRS offers free tax assistance for low- and middle-income taxpayers through the Tax-Aide program.

With special attention to those 60 and older, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers, trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service and the S.C. Department of Revenue, are offering free tax consultation and preparation of personal tax returns at the following locations:

In Santee: Each Tuesday from 9 to noon starting Feb. 12, at the Santee Presbyterian Church, 306 Bradford Blvd., Santee.

In Orangeburg: Each Thursday from 9 to 3:30 starting Feb.7, at the Orangeburg County Council on Aging, 2570 St. Matthews Road, Orangeburg.

Since its inception in 1968, this program has grown to become the nation's largest volunteer-operated counseling tax service, preparing and e-filing returns and answering questions for over 35 milion clients free of charge.

During 2006 the Tax-Aide Service assisted more than 2 million people in meeting their tax filing obligations.

In Orangeburg County, numerous taxpayers were assisted by AARP volunteers.

Contacts are Wayne Baxter, district coordinator, 803-854-3320, baxter7500@earthlink,net and Bill Powell, Orangeburg, 803-535-4287 wpowell@oburg.net.
