Elmore headlines list of recruits visiting SCSU this weekend

A year ago, South Carolina State was successful in luring South Carolina "Mr. Football" Malcolm Long of Gaffney away from a very interested Winston-Salem State.

This weekend, the Bulldogs will try to do the same with "Superman" a.k.a running back Lennel Elmore of Allendale-Fairfax, who's already received an offer from another North Carolina school in three-time defending Football Championship Subdivision champion Appalachian State.

The Shrine Bowl standout is among six senior prospects being recruited by the Bulldogs who will visit the campus this weekend. Along with touring the campus, the visiting student-athletes will get to attend Saturday's basketball doubleheader at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center which includes a noon nationally-televised women's basketball game featuring SCSU against Hampton.

The other five recruits accompanying Elmore include:

- North-South All-Star wide receiver Randall Hawkins (6-0, 190 lbs.) of Class 4-A Division I champion J.F. Byrnes.

- Defensive tackle Dyrell Porcha (6-3, 260 lbs.) of Class A Division II runner-up Carver's Bay.

- Offensive lineman Larry Patterson (6-5, 260 lbs.) of A.C. Flora.

- Running back Gary Grace (5-11, 225 lbs.) of Chattahoochee High School in Alpharetta, Ga.

- Linebacker C.J. Missick (5-10, 200 lbs.) of Stratford.

Over the past two seasons, the 5-10, 165-pound Elmore was among the state's most prolific offensive weapons with over 4,500 total yards and over 40 touchdowns as a running back and kick returner. Elmore helped the Tigers post back-to-back 10-plus victory seasons for the first time in school history and he, Calhoun County's Donte Rumph and Bamberg-Ehrhardt All-American Daquan Bowers were the only Class A players selected to this year's victorious South Carolina Shrine Bowl team.

Elmore is a three-sport athlete at Allendale-Fairfax, competing in boys' basketball and track, where this past May he earned two bronze medals in the high jump and long jump to help the Tigers win the S.C. High School League Class A track and field title. In fact, Elmore is squeezing in his SCSU visit between road basketball games Friday at Estill and Saturday at Wade Hampton.

Elmore's head football and track and field coach, Wayne Farmer, who played at SCSU under Bill Davis, said fellow FCS schools Howard University, Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian have also offered Elmore. Farmer said Elmore plans to visit Appalachian State next weekend.

" I must say these are some great recruits. I hope Buddy can get these guys to sign. If so...this will be a remarkable class. I was hoping the kid from OW(Lucas) would give the dogs a chance. You know most kids from Orangeburg dont want to stay home a play football. I'm sure they would love to have him in Bulldog land. All I can say is if USC get him....I hope they dont treat him like they did Alonzo Middleton from OW. "

" These recruits or future SC State Bulldogs which is what I call them know where to get the best education in this state if not the country. They know about SCSU being ranked in the top ten schools by the Washington Journal and Ebony Magazine. They know that SC State University will be on TV a lot. More than App. State. We have to play UCF which I hear is going to air on the Sunshine network throughout Florida and nationally if you have a dish. We have to play Clemson. Our Hampton and FAMU games always make ESPNU. So you are talking about 3-4 nationally televised games which could include homecoming. And as Jay Z would say"Streets Is Watching" meaning Scouts is watching. Cleve McCoy will get a NFL shot because of our TV coverage. Will Ford will get drafted because of our TV coverage. And we have the best Oline in the MEAC Conference who keep winning awards and they all will get drafted. So Elmore knows what time it is. He knows Malcolm Long hadn't lost a game he has started in about 2 years with back to back titles in high school. UCF has #24 nicknamed 24 Karat Gold. Who would be the second RB pick after McFadden from Arkansas if he were to come out but he is staying. So Elmore and Will Ford will get to show this guy what time it is. I can't wait to see Will Ford and Lennel Elmore vs. CJ Spiller and James Davis. Also Mr. Grant who wrote this article, with all do repect, Malcolm Long was also recruited by USC and Clemsom. Lennel I already have your nickname picked out- L. El Cool Slash. How can you guys pass on the best band in the land- 101, The Champagne Dancers-Good Lawd, and a campus full of Beyonce looking women. See you guys in OCD this fall-Oliver C Dawson Bulldog Stadium. This is SCSU-
I thought U Knew!!! "
