Elmore may be leaning toward signing with S.C. State
By BRIAN LINDER, T&D Sports Editor Wednesday, February 06, 2008Superman might just suit up for South Carolina State next season.
Allendale-Fairfax's Lennel Elmore, a preseason Elite 11 selection, first team All-T&D selection and a Shrine Bowler this season after totaling over 4,500 yards and 40 touchdowns the past two years, has been mum since narrowing his choice of schools down to Appalachian State and South Carolina State. Tuesday night, Elmore's coach, Wayne Farmer, indicated his star would likely sign with South Carolina State, but added the decision could come down to the last minute. The Tigers' signing day, which is likely to feature as many as six players signing with colleges, is scheduled to take place at 2 p.m. at Allendale-Fairfax high School.
"Either way, it is going to be a hard decision," Farmer said.
Farmer said that whoever ends up with Elmore will getting a player that could have played at a larger program.
"I think Division I really dropped the ball on him," he said. "That didn't really work out, but I think this is going to be real good for him."
Elmore mostly played tailback at Allendale-Fairfax but began making the transition to wide receiver during practice for the Shrine Bowl. Earlier this week, Elmore said both SCSU and App. State were recruiting him to play slot receiver, and that he felt he could make the transition to the position, and Farmer said he thinks his player can as well.
"It's going to be a little bit of a transition," he said. "But, he is an athlete. A lot of schools wanted to recruit him as a cover corner which I think he can also do. They can move him into (wide receiver) quickly. It's going to be a little change running routes. He has great hands and jumping ability. They can put him in the slot. I think he, just the athlete he is, he can adept to it quickly and could have a big impact at whatever program he goes to."
And, if Elmore doesn't pan out at wide receiver, Farmer said he could easily continue to play tailback at the next level.
"Ten pounds on him and he can definitely take that grind," he said. "No doubt about it, he can get the job done."
Elmore's decision highlights a Signing Day in the T&D Region that figures to be filled with the expected. Pelion's Dalton Freeman, a Clemson commit, is set to become his high school's first Division I player. The University of Kentucky is scheduled to pick up a pair of signees in Swansea's Taylor Wyndham and Calhoun County's Donte Rumph. Orangeburg-Wilkinson's Sterling Lucas is expected to sign with N.C. State while teammate Brian Harrison is expected to sign with Coastal Carolina. Bamberg-Ehrhardt's Chris Presley is also expected to make good on his commitment to Coastal Carolina while teammate Brandon Bamberg figures to sign with Holy Cross.
