evens 2008 record
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Claflin University baseball team swept a doubleheader Saturday to even their season record at 2-2.
In the first game, Claflin defeated Miles College 23-19 behind a 3-5 effort from Eric Taylor, who swatted 2 home runs. Wesley Platts went 2-3 and John Moody was 2-4.
Norman O'Neal picked up the win to go to 1-0.
In the second game, Claflin won 13-12 behind a 2-double, 6-RBIs effort from Platts.
Eric Jordan picked up the win to also go to 1-0.
The Panthers visit Hartsville on Tuesday to play Coker.
Friday, Claflin plays a doubleheader at home against Alderson Broadus College, beginning at 1 p.m.
On Saturday, Claflin has another doubleheader, also at 1 p.m., against Shaw University.
SCSU softball team
drops 2 at tournament
MARIETTA, Ga. -- The S.C. State softball team dropped two games at the Tiny L. Laster HBCU Fast-pitch Tournament at the All-Tournament Players Park on Saturday.
These were the opening games of the 2008 season for the Lady Bulldogs.
In their first game S.C. State fell to Grambling State, 16-1. Grambling had a huge second inning as they scored 7 of their 16 runs in that inning. The Lady Tigers scored four runs in third and five runs in the fifth. The Lady Bulldogs' lone run came in the bottom of the fourth when Yeshira Butler led the inning with a double and then crossed the plate off an RBI single by Channell Thompson.
In its second game, S.C. State fell to Alcorn State University, 8-3. Alcorn State put up six runs by the middle of the second inning before S.C. State could put their offense together. The Lady Bulldogs scored three runs off two hits and a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to pull within three, 6-3. Alcorn State put up two additional runs in the top of the sixth en route to its 8-3 victory.
S.C. State will be back in action Sunday as they face Jackson State at 3 p.m. and Mississippi Valley State at 5 p.m. in the final day of the tournament.
