High School Basketball

Varsity Boys

Lower Richland 66, Orangeburg-Wilkinson 55

HOPKINS -- Alexcion Void and Jayson Leverett both scored 12 points, but it wasn't enough to keep the Orangeburg-Wilkinson alive in the Class 4-A playoffs.

Timothy Young and Jared Williams each scored 11 for O-W (12-13) and Sterling Lucas added eight.

Orangeburg Prep 55, Thomas Sumter 49

The Orangeburg Prep varsity boys basketball team also advanced to the second round of the SCISAA Region 3-AAA tournament.

OPS, evening their record at 13-13, plays Wilson Hall at 8 p.m. Monday, also at the Sumter County Exhibition Center.

Orangeburg Prep was led by Robert McCurry with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Wynton Carter had 9 points.

Bradley Busch led TSA with a game-high 17 points.

Bowman Academy 60, Andrew Jackson Academy 59

EHRHARDT -- Wesley Collier hit a layup under the basket as time expired to left BA to the Region 3-A tournament title.

Tripp Looper led BA with 22 points and 16 rebounds; Wesley Bilton had 14 points and Jordan Gunnells had 13 points.

Ryan Fender led AJA with 22 points and 16 rebounds; Justin Rentz had 18 points and Bryan Bishop had 13.

For Bowman Academy (20-8), Collier, Bilton and Gunnells were named to the All-Tournament team. For AJA, Rentz and Fender were named to the All-Tournament team. Looper was the tournament and regular season 3-AAA MVP.

Varsity Girls

Orangeburg Prep 46, Robert E. Lee 31

SUMTER -- The Orangeburg Prep girls varsity basketball team advanced to the second round of the SCISAA Region 3-AAA tournament Saturday.

OPS (18-8) will play Wilson Hall at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Sumter Exhibition Center. Orangeburg Prep was paced by Lauren Holly with 19 points and 14 rebounds; Barkley Stoudenmire added 10 points, Allie Huggins had nine and Madison Rheney six.

Robert E. Lee was led by Jayme Douglas with 10 points.

Andrew Jackson 42, Bowman Academy 31

EHRHARDT -- Courtney Garcia had 19 points for AJA in the Region 3-A tournament championship game.

Erica Bessinger added seven for AJA (17-9). Alana Ulmer led Bowman Academy (17-12) with 14 and Katie Bonnett had 10.

Bessinger, Ahsten Murray and Kristen Mixon were named to the All-Tournament team for AJA. Bonnett and Ulmer were named to the team for BA. Courtney Garcia was the tournament MVP; BA's Kayla Easterlin, who was held out of tournament play with an injury, was the region's regular-season MVP.

Friday's Late Area

Calhoun Academy 45, Colleton Prep 42

WALTERBORO -- Kelsey Sanders had 16 points and Jessica Lyons added 12 to lead Calhoun Academy to a 45-42 victory Friday over Colleton Prep.

Sanders also had 7 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists, while Lyons grabbed 2 rebounds. Rachel Rose had 5 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds and 3 assists; Kristin Minnich had 6 points and 8 rebounds; and Hanna Bozard had 4 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

Calhoun is now 14-9, and takes on Holly Hill Academy Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Colleton Prep in the region tournament championship.

High School Wrestling

Four Cougar wrestlers

qualify for state tourney

AYNOR -- Four members of the Edisto High wrestling team qualified for the I-A state individual state tournament to be held next Saturday, Feb. 23, at Gilbert High School.

Qualifying was Armorio Pulsh (125 lbs.) who finished fourth in the Lower State individual tournament held at Aynor. Tobias Tyler captured third at 152 pounds; Lawrence Buck was second at 160 pounds and Darius Frazier finished in third place in his division.

Voorhees women

defeat Talladega

The Voorhees College Lady Tigers were able to defeat the Talladega College Lady Tornados 140-31 in women's college basketball on Saturday evening.

The Lady Tigers' Jennifer Perry led a balanced attack with a game-high 13 points, followed by former Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High School standout Courtney Milhouse, Maryesha Robinson and Takashi Franklin, all with 12 points. Rhadja Page chipped in 10 points.

Talladega College was led by Crystal Brown with 13 points.

Voorhees led at the half 52-12.

Earlier in the week the Lady Tigers knocked off former EIAC rivals Morris College 71-49 and Allen University 85-56. In Sumter at Morris College, Page and Brittney Whaley scored 19 points apiece. Milhouse put in 10 points. The Lady Hornets were paced by April Drakeford with 16 points and Amii Rodgers scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

In Columbia at Allen University, Voorhees was led again by Whaley with a game-high 15 points, followed by Milhouse with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds and Page added 12 points. The Lady Yellow Jackets were led by Brittney Fontenot with 12 points and Keyonia Gallman scored 10 points.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action with a home game in Denmark vs. Allen on Thursday, Feb. 21. at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
