GREENVILLE, S.C. - Furman junior right-handed pitcher Jay Jackson has been invited to play with the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod League this summer, it has been announced.

Jackson, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound product of Greenville’s Christ Church Episcopal School, is among a half dozen players from Southern Conference schools to earn Cape Cod League invitations for 2008.

In 2007 Jackson earned 13 starts on the mound for Furman and posted a 1-4 mark and 4.59 ERA. He also hit .289 with six home runs and 31 RBI in 41 starts in the outfield.

He went 5-0 with a 1.96 earned run average for the Delaware Cows in 2007 Great Lakes Summer League action and was named the GLSCL’s “Top Athlete” and the league’s No. 2 prospect by Baseball America. In 36 2/3 innings of work he surrendered only 26 hits, eight earned runs, and six walks while striking out 38 in helping his squad to a 25-14 record and second place finish.

In two seasons with the Paladins he has gone 4-4 with a 5.09 ERA and two saves and batted .293 with 15 home runs and 74 RBI.

Baseball America recently rated Jackson the Southern Conference’s third best prospect for the 2008 Major League Draft.

A total of 222 Cape Cod League alumni were selected in the 2007 Major League Draft.

Hyannis opens its 2008 campaign on June 14 against the Chatham A’s.
