Being known for being good citizens

OUR VIEW: Citizenship makes county stand out
CITIZENSHIP!
CITIZENSHIP!
CITIZENSHIP! That's the Orangeburg County Community of Character trait for March. Let's give it special attention.
And also, don't forget, we're an All-American County. We won that title and will always be very special as a result.
What is citizenship? What is a citizen? Being a citizen means you're a native from birth or have attained citizenship through the naturalization process. We live in a splendid state and county because those who've anteceded us have made them that way and because, through our efforts, they'll be improved. In America throughout its history, people, acting alone or in groups, have spoken out for betterment.
We got the ideal of citizenship from ancient Greeks and Romans who tested themselves with their democracies and republics. We vote for and select our public decision-makers. And, if they're failures, we vote them out.
And we in Orangeburg County want to be good citizens, don't we, with all the rights, duties and privileges that entails. July will be special because we'll break no laws, present ourselves, homes and yards as clean -- totally presentable; vote when called upon; give generously to our places of worship or to the organizations that help make our town and county live up to all that is wholesome. Let's make our neighborhoods family-oriented, where citizens rear children to carry on a legacy of goodness and helpfulness.
When we speak of home sweet home we talk of a place that has a social public conscience. If conditions dissatisfy you, speak up as a citizen. If not you, who?
American citizens have been improvers, self-reliant, individualistic, ambitious, productive. This state of affairs provides us with the greatest sum of human happiness of all states and nations.
We're already good citizens. Let's do even better this month of March.
