RIDGEVILLE, S.C. - A bus carrying 32 kindergarten students collided with a sport utility vehicle that crossed a center line Thursday, and the students were taken to a hospital with bumps and bruises, authorities said.

All 32 students and seven adults on the bus were treated and released, Trident Health System spokeswoman Julie Plummer said.

Joe Simmons, 58, was driving the county-owned Chevrolet Blazer and was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina, said Highway Patrol spokesman Lance Cpl. Bob Beres.

A hospital spokeswoman there said Simmons’ condition was not available because he was still being treated in the emergency room.

Beres said the SUV crossed the center line on U.S. Highway 78 shortly after 9 a.m. and hit another vehicle before slamming into the bus head-on. The driver and a passenger of the other car were expected to be released from a hospital Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The Harleyville-Ridgeville Elementary School students were headed to Charleston on a field trip.
