WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement regarding passage of the House amendment to the Senate amendment of H.R. 3773, FISA Amendments Act.

“Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a comprehensive national security bill that seeks to thwart the efforts of terrorists intent on harming our homeland and citizens. Along with strengthening our counter-terrorist capabilities, this legislation safeguards our core constitutional freedoms and prevents the federal government from spying on its citizens.

“H.R. 3773 authorizes and provides our intelligence agencies with the resources they need to conduct surveillance operations against foreign terrorist networks and other transnational entities suspected of planning attacks that target our citizens and homeland. This legislation also ensures proper oversight of the FISA warrantless surveillance program and preserves the privacy of all Americans by mandating that any inadvertent surveillance of U.S. citizens is dismissed.

“This New Direction Congress remains vigilant and proactive in securing our borders, protecting our ports, and destabilizing terrorist networks. The FISA Amendments Act further solidifies the House Democratic Leadership’s commitment to making America safer and propelling our country forward in a New Direction.”
