BLACKVILLE, S.C. - Macedonia Elementary School has raised more than $3,000 to help lymphoma and leukemia patients.

The school's Junior Beta Club sponsored the Pennies for Patients campaign.

"Last year through the efforts of our students and faculty and staff, we raised about $3,000. Our goal this year was $3,001.00," Beta Club sponsor Tonya James said. "This year, we offered pizza parties and other prizes as well as daily encouragement to our students. We started on the 100th day of the academic year and asked each student to bring 100 pennies. Just that idea allowed us to collect over $200 the first day. And, with continued support and encouragement, the students raised $3,232.24. I am so proud of them."

Principal Teresa Reid added, "Ms. James is a wonderful sponsor. She really has a passion for these children and their activities, and it spills over into everything she does. I am also proud of the support of this project shown by the faculty and staff and the students. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this campaign. A number of parents donated, and I would like to recognize and thank the Town of Blackville for their generous donation as well."

The winning class that raised the most money was Mrs. Craig's kindergarten class, which raised $500. As a prize, they will receive a pizza party, an ice cream party and a bingo party, James said.

Because of the amount the school raised, plans are being made for a school-wide celebration later in the year.
