NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Two people have been killed in a fire at North Charleston home that lacked electric service.

Firefighters responded to the fire near the old Charleston Naval Base about 2 a.m. Sunday.

North Charleston Fire Department Battalion Chief Eric Phillips told The Post and Courier of Charleston that witnesses said they heard people yelling for help.

Phillips says the fire was too intense for firefighters to go inside when they arrived. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found the bodies of a man and woman inside.

Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten identified them as 49-year-old Joseph Nelson and 58-year-old Vivian Chambers. Wooten says preliminary examinations indicate they died of smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
