Hiking, mountain biking scheduled from High Hills Outdoors Center

WEDGEFIELD -- Several special tours are scheduled in the coming months from the new Palmetto Trail's High Hills Outdoor Center at Battens Store on S.C. 261 in Wedgefield.

The Wilderness Hike, the premier hike of the spring series, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26.

This hike will explore one of the wildest and most remote sections on the Palmetto Trail and will be led by Bill Baskin, an avid hiker and outdoorsman. Hikers will have lunch on the trail.

Reservations are required. Call 803-494-5954 or e-mail highhillscenter@palmettoconservation.org. The cost is $5. Those participating must supply their own canoe or kayak.

The Killer Three mountain bike tour will also begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26. Tour leader will be Tony Merritt, an experienced biker who knows all the best trails. Participants must supply their own mountain bikes.

The National Trails Day Hike will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7. The guide, Wayne Argrabright, is one of the most experienced in the swamp ecosystem and is well versed in the flora and fauna.

Another tour, titled "Mill Creek Going South," will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14. The hike will be led by Steve Collum, naturalist and GIS expert for Palmetto Conservation Foundation.
