With 17 Grammy awards, the Count Basie Orchestra is lauded as one of the most phenomenal bands in history. Having the Kansas City swing style and a taste of its own originality, the 16- to 18-piece orchestra is known as a premier jazz band and follows the repertoire of Count Basie, under the direction of Bill Hughes.

On Thursday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m., the Count Basie Orchestra will perform in the Jonas T. Kennedy Center's Tullis Arena on the campus of Claflin University. Tickets are $5 for faculty and staff with ID, free for students with ID, $10 in advance for the general public and $12 at the door. Tickets are available at the Orangeburg County Fine Arts Center or by calling the School of Humanities and Sciences at 803-535-5232.

The Count Basie Orchestra performance is sponsored by the Claflin University Lyceum Series and is one of several upcoming series events. The Claflin University Concert Choir will perform its annual concert Monday and Tuesday, April 21-22. The Lyric Opera Theater performance will be held Thursday, April 17, and the University Wind Ensemble will perform Wednesday, April 23. Claflin will host the Army Field Band on Saturday, April 26. All performances are free and will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Ministers' Hall.
