DENMARK, S.C. - Dr. Cleveland L. Sellers, a political activist, civil rights pioneer, educator and administrator, has been named the next president of Voorhees College.

As a young man, the Denmark native aligned himself with the veterans of the civil rights movement.

Joining the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, he traveled throughout the South in the 1960s urging African-Americans to register to vote. He also worked as an advocate for justice and human rights.

He was injured in the events that came to be known as the Orangeburg Massacre, and was the only person ever convicted in connection with them. He was later pardoned.

Sellers went on to serve as director of the African-American Studies program at the University of South Carolina.

His son Bakari is a state representative serving District 90.

" Now, everyone is saying that the college needs experience. What kind of experience are you looking for? I have know Mr. Sellers since I was a child, I lived across the street from his parents with my Godparents and he was always a nice, pleasant and quiete person. But this man has life as an experience, he has crossed lines and conquered things we have not even though about. He has been in poistion that most of yu will never be placed in or come close to being placed in. Mr. Seller's has one thing that is really needs to do once in office at that college is to have someone that is honest enough to watch his back. The board and the people that are friendly with the board members are the ones that are bringing that college down. I feel that if some of the main people are replaced than the college may have a standing chance. That's my opinion. But CONGRATULATIONS to MR. Sellers. "

" It does my spirit good to see someone chosen who is local. People are always talking about wanting someone with experience, but you can't get experience until you are afforded the opportunity to perform the duties. You can surround yourself with individuals who are experienced in areas and since he has been working at a university, he must have a workable knowledge of what is required. This is 2008 and the word of God says it means "New Beginning." I live in Denmark and feel it is such an honor to have him as the President of Voorhees College "

" Judging from the picture, I think Sellers smells something fishy about this hiring. "

" Pick I have to agree with you. I really do think voorheese could have made a better choice. But be aware. Denmark is a very small town and people talk. "

" It has always been a journey for Voorhees; with Dr. Sellers being appointed president, there is no doubt that he will lead them to their destination. GREAT CHOICE TIGERS!!!! "

" Perhaps Dr. Sellers will be able to pull Voorhees out of the financial rut it's been in for years. Dr. Walker has tried, but I guess she really had no idea what she was getting into! "

" What type of Presidental experience is he bringing to Voorhees? I think they should have selected someone with more experience. "
