Local Southern rocker David Cooler did not win the opportunity to open up Kenny Chesney’s “Poets and Pirates” tour but he got the next best thing,
Chesney made a surprise appearance at Friday finals of the Columbia-based WCOS radio station’s “Become the Next Big Star” contest and watched Cooler perform.
“We didn’t win but it was an awesome night,” said Cooler, who was one of four finalists in the contest vying to lead off Chesney’s show. “I got to play with Kenny Chesney looking at me dead in the face. You can’t beat that.”
Cooler noted that Chesney was on the stage with people chanting his name and afterwards he got to meet the country music star.
The winning band was the Columbia trio Woodwork Roadshaw.
The Bamberg native Cooler was grateful for the strong crowd he had during the finals, estimating that about 90 percent of the audience were his supporters.
On Saturday, Cooler was already back on the road to do a show in Waycross, Ga., and is set to perform at Stevenson Auditorium Thursday night as a part of Showcase Orangeburg.
“Its going to be another busy week,” he said.
He said his new music video “Bootleg Boogie” will debut on both YouTube.com and Myspace.com next week.
