COLUMBIA, S.C. - Sex offenders would be barred from living near places where children gather such as schools, day care centers and parks under legislation the Senate Judiciary Committee has approved.

The House bill sent to the Senate floor for debate Tuesday allows existing sex offenders to stay where they now live and prevents local governments from forcing them to move.

Senator Brad Hutto says the legislation would force sex offenders into rural areas.

The Orangeburg Democrat also raised an objection to the bill that may make it difficult for it to clear the Senate during the next few weeks before the session ends.
