Special to The T&D

CAMDEN -– For perhaps the first time in tournament history, the final match of the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship will be a collegians-only final.

Harrison Moore, a College of Charleston golfer and partner Allen Koon, a University of South Carolina golfer will face South Carolinians Baxter Culler of Hartsville and Josh Gallman of Gaffney. Culler and Gallman are golf teammates at USC–Upstate.

Moore of Orangeburg and Koon of Anderson knocked off three-time champions Bert Atkinson of Charleston and Sammy Truett of Surfside Beach 6 and 5 to advance while Culler made a 10-foot birdie on the first extra hole against Bobby Dean of Charlotte and Robert Preston of Matthews, N.C., to punch his team’s ticket the finals.

Qualifying medalists and uncle-nephew duo Walter and Thomas Todd of Laurens lost in the quarterfinal match to Bobby Dean of Charlotte and Robert Preston of Matthews, N.C.

This is the first visit to the finals for both teams.

While Moore’s visit to the finals is his first, it is certainly not for his family. Father Bill teamed with Bill Ziegler in 1976 to lose to Mike Holland and Marion Fowler, while uncle Marion made it to the finals twice in 1971 and 1977. Marion Moore and partner Allen Powers captured a win in their second title attempt against Vance Heafner and Kim Heisler.

The 18-hole final round is scheduled to begin at 7:30 am.

This event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
