Seminar focuses on how to grow citrus fruits in the Palmetto State
Thursday, May 22, 2008SANTEE -- Ever wanted to grow citrus and hesitated to try because you didn't think it would grow well in South Carolina?
Now's the chance to find out more about successfully growing citrus in the Palmetto State.
The Orangeburg County Master Gardeners will sponsor a seminar, "Growing Citrus Plants in South Carolina," from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at Lone Star Barbecue and Mercantile in Santee.
Ned Rahn of Port Royal, who has had a lifelong interest in all types of plant, will be the keynote speaker. In the mid 1990s, Rahn became particularly attracted to citrus fruiting plants. Through independent study and experimentation, he learned of and began to grow citrus plants that were not only suitable but would flourish in South Carolina. From his home-based nursery, Rahn now offers these plants for sale.
During his talk and slide presentation, Rahn will discuss growing citrus in the state and other regions of the Southeast. A question-and-answer session will follow with handouts available.
Cost for the program, which will include a buffet meal, will be $25. Dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by the program. Door prizes will be given away, and a variety of citrus plants will be available for sale.
To register for the seminar, call the Orangeburg County Clemson Extension Office at 803-534-6280. Registration deadline is Tuesday, May 27.
All proceeds from the seminar will go toward the Orangeburg County Master Gardeners' Resource Center.
