Not there when the district needs her
Friday, May 23, 2008It is time for a change in Orangeburg’s House District 66.
I have been a resident in Orangeburg County for almost 10 years, and I have never met Gilda Cobb-Hunter. People outside of the county speak of her leadership, but she has forgotten about the people she is supposed to represent. We must progress.
There are a few things that I want the people of Orangeburg County to realize.
After reading all the coverage of the tornado, I understand that Congressman Clyburn, Gov. Sanford, Sen. Matthews, Councilman Wimberly and many other elected officials went to Branchville to see the devastation.
* Where were you, Gilda Cobb-Hunter after the tornado hit Branchville?
* Where were you when South Carolina State University needed you?
These are questions for someone who has so much self-proclaimed “power or seniority.” Where was she when her constituents needed her?
Is she just interested in furthering here political career? We need answers. We deserve answers.
Gilda Cobb-Hunter has taken money from payday lenders. She got $1,000 from TitleMax
Management. I am sure that she does not want you to know that. The fact that she got the money is a clear indication of who she represents. Making almost $100,000, Cobb-Hunter does not relate to the people of District 66. I want the people of Orangeburg to realize what the average income of a household in this county is. It is under $30,000 a year.
We need to support someone who will support us and interact with us. I believe Priscilla Glover Robinson is that person. I challenge every voter in District 66 to let their voices be heard. I agree with her slogan. We must take a stance of putting “People above Politics.”
After reading the letter to the editor by an energetic older woman, I believe that the Gilda Cobb-Hunter campaign is trying to interject race into this contest for House District 66. I know that the people of District 66 are much smarter than this. How would anyone know what the black elected officials are thinking without interacting with them?
After reading the editorials the past couple of weeks, it seems evident that Gilda Cobb-Hunter has had everyone that she has done something for write a letter to the editor.
If the black elected officials are supporting Priscilla Glover Robinson, maybe it’s because she is a better candidate. If they are supporting her, maybe it’s because she actually cares about the citizens of House District 66.
It is a shame that Cobb-Hunter is trying to divide Orangeburg more than it already is. Interjecting race into the equation is the wrong move to make. We need to focus on the needs of the district, not petty politics.
Robinson is above the “status quo.” She is committed to helping Orangeburg County and South Carolina transition into inevitable change. Cobb-Hunter, in my opinion, is unable to do so. She has been neglecting the citizens of her district in order to chase national headlines that have not been chasing her.
We need to come together as a community, not as a black community or a white community but one community. I urge all of the citizens of District 66 to see past this negative type of campaigning. As a district, we can do better.
