SCHSL releases football schedules

Fans of S.C. High School League football can use today’s holiday to start planning out their fall Fridays.

The now available 2008 schedules offers the usual array of rivalries and compelling non-region matchups. It will once again kick off locally during Week Zero with two games, including the Battle of Highway 301 between Bamberg-Ehrhardt and Edisto.

The host team Red Raiders have won the last five contests in the rivalry and the game marks the debut of Kevin Crosby as B-E head coach.

A week later, Tommy Brown makes his return as Orangeburg-Wilkinson head football coach when the Bruins play host to former Region 7-AAAA rival Stratford. In his second tenure at the school, Brown hopes to turn around a program which has gone three straight seasons without a winning record.

Another return highlighting Week One is at Branchville, where the Yellow Jackets will play their first varsity game in 16 years against North. Former Bamberg-Ehrhardt athletics director Dan Reynolds looks to make a strong debut at Branchville, which will compete in Region 5-A.

Other key matchups to watch during the 2008 regular season:

-(Sept. 5) Edisto at Calhoun County - The Cougars have won the last three meetings in the series, while the Saints look for big things from their All-American wide receiver Alshon Jeffery.

- (Sept. 12) Blackville-Hilda at Allendale-Fairfax - The Tigers needed a ‘Superman’ effort from South Carolina State signee Lennel Elmore to stun the Hawks at their place last season.

- (Sept. 26) Allendale-Fairfax at Calhoun County - An early clash of Region 5-A rivals which could determine which school is in the driver’s seat for the region title.

- (Sept. 26) Woodland at Hanahan - Sophomore quarterback Robert Smith looks for revenge against the program which defeated his Wolverines twice last season.

-Oct. 3) Calhoun County at Bamberg-Ehrhardt - The Red Raiders look to hold off one of the teams standing in the way of a Region 5-A ‘three-peat’

-(Oct. 3) Pelion at Edisto - The Panthers are back in Region 5-AA and face a Cougars’ team which has beaten them in five of six meetings.

-(Oct. 10) Orangeburg-Wilkinson at Lexington - The Bruins return to Wildcat Hallow for the first time in four years and look to snap a five-game losing streak to the Wildcats.

-(Oct. 17) Silver Bluff at Edisto - The Cougars have won just two of 19 meetings against the Bulldogs.

-(Oct. 17) Bamberg-Ehrhardt at Allendale-Fairfax - The two teams have met four times over the last two seasons.

-(Oct. 24) Aiken at Orangeburg-Wilkinson - The Bruins’ old nemesis from Region 4-AAAA makes a return visit to the Garden City.

-(Oct. 31) Blackville-Hilda at Williston-Elko - An in-county rivalry with region and Class A Division II championship ramifications. The Blue Devils snapped an eight-game losing streak last year to the Hawks, who went on to win the Division II title.

-(Nov. 7) - The Class A, 2-A and 3-A playoffs begin, while O-W closes out its Class 4-A schedule at home against Richland Northeast.

A full schedule for all the SCHSL teams is available at www.schsl.org.
