No twister, but storm packed a punch
By T&D StaffMonday, June 02, 2008BOWMAN -- The thunderstorms that beat Orangeburg County on Sunday night tore the tin off a Bowman man’s home and flattened his corn, leaving him wondering if he was hit by a tornado.
“We had a tornado down here -- it had to have been, because it didn’t touch anything else, but it took the roof off my house,” Michael Void said.
But the National Weather Service didn’t record any tornados. It did spot some strong storms in the county, with radar indicating winds could have reached up to 60 mph in some places.
Void said he was visiting his next-door neighbor when the storm started. First there was rain, then there was hail, a little more rain and then heavy wind.
He laughed as he saw the wind wrapping his neighbor’s car with insulation -- until he realized it was insulation from his own home.
When it was all over, his neighbor’s home was fine and his roof was ruined. The corn in his garden was flattened, while the corn across the street was still standing tall.
Monday’s forecast is a bit milder, with only a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms. The high temperature is expected to be about 90 degrees.
