COLUMBIA, S.C. - The South Carolina House has agreed to override Gov. Mark Sanford’s budget vetoes on children’s health care and defending indigents in drunken driving and domestic violence cases.

The House started the hours-long process Tuesday.

Sanford vetoed 69 items worth about $72 million in the $7 billion budget and wants the money freed up to buy fuel for school buses and operate prisons.

The House overrode Sanford’s veto of $21 million from a Medicaid program for children’s health care on a 115-4 vote. They also agreed to restore $2.3 million cut from indigent defense programs.

They agreed with a few vetoes, including dropping the spending of more than $257,000 for security to protect the Confederate submarine Hunley and its artifacts.

The House overrides must also be considered by the Senate.
