FCA golf tournament to be held at Hillcrest

The sixth annual FCA Golf Tournament will be hosted by the Midlands 4 Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on June 9 at Hillcrest Golf Club.

The tournament is held to raise money to support local ministries and send children to Christian camps throughout the southeastern portion of the country. The tournament raised $28,000 and sent 140 children to different summer camps last year.

While the tournament is a fundraiser, it also gives the community an opportunity to honor local coaches and heroes.

“I think a lot of that helped bring people from the community to our tournament,” FCA representative Earl Humes said, “along with the great prizes and the great job that Coca-Cola does in making sure that we have enough soda, water--you name it--to make sure that our golf tournament is a success.”

Every year, the FCA honors former SCSU head football coach George Wheeler. This year, the Midlands 4 Chapter will also honor Frank Staley, J.C. Pace, Tommy Eklund, Jim Guthrie and former Claflin basketball coach Gus Guyton.

Last year, 31 teams participated in the tournament. With 32 teams already entered this year, the FCA hopes to have 36 teams competing in the Captain’s Choice event.

The tournament will be sponsored by TNT Fireworks, Coca-Cola, Superior Motors and Cox Industries. Tournament check-in will begin at 11 a.m. Golfers will begin play at noon.

For more information, call Earl Humes at (803) 707-1197 or Geb Runager at (803) 534-5369.
