NORWAY - Free produce is being available to residents of Norway today.

The Rev. James Pritchard during June’s Norway Town Council meeting announced that the Harvest Hope Food Bank would be delivering free produce to Norway residents at the Norway Food Club/IGA parking lot at 11 a.m. today (Saturday, June 14).

Also during the meeting, providing adequate law enforcement protection for the town was once again addressed.

Resident Larry Polite noted that he had been the victim of a break-in and asked about police coverage.

Norway Police Capt. Curtis Mizell, in response to Polite, said he had already taken out warrants against two suspects in the break-in, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

Councilman Greg Covington wanted to know if there was any way Norway could hire another police officer. Hiring another officer is under consideration, Mayor Brad Fogle said, although current finances would not permit it.

Resident Ann Johnson asked if Norway has a noise ordinance and was informed that the town doesn’t.

Also during the meeting, resident Joey Williamson asked about the zoning laws for Norway and was told that they are available to the public.

In other business:

* Councilwoman Geraldine Bell, streets/sanitation commissioner, reported that grass-cutting was continuing in the town. She noted that Lynn Garrick had trimmed the town’s crepe myrtle trees.

* The water and wastewater report indicated that the wastewater plant had no DHEC violations during May and that the CCR (water quality report) had been received from Orangeburg DPU. The report will be delivered to water customers in Norway, and a copy will be forwarded to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control by July 1.

* The May police report noted that 47 citations were issued and four incident reports filed. One felony arrest was made.

* Jim Preacher asked the mayor questions about the 2006 audit including who wrote the 2006 budget and when the 2007 audit would be available. Fogle said he prepared the 2006 budget and was not certain when the 2007 budget would be available.

* Bell asked if water services that were turned off were locked with a lock, and she was told that this was not always the case. Fogle, however, said that if the customer attempted to turn the service back on, the service would be locked.

* Former mayor Rose Dukes thanked the mayor and Council for an “excellent” Memorial Day service.
