An Orangeburg woman was taken to the hospital Thursday after being assaulted and robbed outside a Columbia Road bank.

Orangeburg Department of Public Safety Capt. Ed Conner said the 59-year-old was assaulted as she attempted to enter Community Resource Bank around 3:39 p.m.

Our officers were at Community Resource Bank providing an escort when an individual ran to the officers stating a lady had been robbed in the parking lot, Conner said.

The womans name was not being released for her security, Conner said. She was transported to the Regional Medical Center to be treated for head injuries.

She was struck in the head area, Conner said. Its undetermined at this time what kind of object was used.

The incident echoes Sundays assault on a 73-year-old Florida woman, who was stabbed during an alleged purse-snatching. The woman has since been released from the hospital and a suspect was arrested in that case.

In Thursdays incident, investigators say that as the woman attempted to cross the parking lot, a male assaulted her and made off with her belongings, including an undetermined amount of cash.

The victim said she was walking to the bank and was approached by a subject that assaulted her, Conner said.

Officers arrived to find the woman in the parking lot, bleeding from her head.

Late Thursday, the Orangeburg woman remained hospitalized with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Her attacker made good his escape in a gold Chevrolet Malibu, Conner said. The license plate on the Chevrolet came back as stolen.

Police issued an alert Thursday for a black male of unknown age, weighing about 150 pounds, standing about 6 feet 1 inch tall and wearing a black T-shirt.

Conner said if anyone has any information on the individual, they are urged to contact the ODPS at 803-533-5907 or Crimestoppers of the Midlands at 1-888-CRIMESC. Callers who telephone the 24-hour Crimestoppers hot line are immediately given a code number. If their tip results in an arrest, the caller is eligible for a reward of $50 to $1,000.

" I wonder if this crime is GANG related.. I spotted some young men, a group of them to be exact in black t-shirts and blue jeans.

Are there GANGS in Orangeburg S.C. ??? "

" "damifiknow" - anyone who has information to "rat" is most likely obstructing justice or acting as an accessory after the fact by holding out. They should be grateful for any amount of reward instead of criminal charges. "

" MK, you may have hit the nail on the head... finding a "really honest person" these days sometimes becomes the issue. And when you pay eye witnesses, much integrity is lost because the eye witness may be just ticked with someone they want to see behind bars - especially when they can point a finger anonymously. "

" A really honest person who sees such acts of violence going on and who knows the individual committing the act should not expect money for, as they state "ratting" on this individual(s), it is your civic duty and the money you are expecting could go to purchase another vest, etc. to protect our law enforcement officers. " Stop trying to rob people and get a job or go to school. I carry P-89 so if you try me you are gone. I and most people only carry debit cards so you are robbing us for nothing. In either case you go to jail. There are no short cuts. Make a record or a film rated G, PG, R, whatever. Camcoders are cheap. Think of a reality show. Go to SC State or Claflin and be somebody. Or go to OCtech for 2 years. Either way the Dubai company is coming soon with a ton of jobs. Oh yeah but if you rob someone, they won't hire you if you have a theft on your record-WISE UP. "
