Police have few leads in shooting death

Investigators are asking the public for information regarding Saturday night’s shooting that left an Orangeburg man dead.

“We have a full investigation, trying to identify the shooter or shooters at this time,” Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams said.

“We had a theory of two shooters, but we haven’t been able to sustain that,” he said.

Williams said 27-year-old Erick Marion Dickson, of 2461 Charleston Highway, died Sunday after he was taken to the Regional Medical Center to be treated for gunshot wounds he received Saturday night.

A neighbor of the victim reported to police that around 9 p.m., he heard a gunshot just prior to seeing Dickson leave as a passenger in a truck, according to an Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

Before the victim had been picked up by a friend, Dickson had asked another neighbor to call police “because he had been shot,” according to the report.

At the front door of Dickson’s home, investigators found “a large amount of blood, a shell casing and two bullet holes,” the report states.

At the hospital, Dickson was under sedation when deputies arrived to question him. The Charleston Highway man never regained consciousness, the report states. He died at about 6 a.m.

“We’re waiting for the pathologist’s report and looking into anything that would lead us to the shooter,” Williams said. “At the present time, we don’t have a person of interest.”

Police are looking into the possibility that Dickson may have been trying to sell a vehicle when an unknown assailant shot him.

An incident report indicates that after the shooting, Dickson called an acquaintance stating he needed someone to take him to the hospital.

Recorded in the incident report, the friend told police that Dickson had said, “he was trying to sell his car when he was shot. The (friend) advised he observed the victim bleeding from a(n) unknown area, fading in and out of consciousness.”

Investigators are left with little to go on, Williams said. There appears to have been no break-in or theft of the victim’s property.

“If anyone has any information, we ask they call the sheriff’s office or Crimestoppers,” Williams said.

The OCSO can be reached at 803-534-3550. The number for Crimestoppers of the Midlands is 1-888-CRIMESC.
