July is month for kindness

ISSUE: Community of Character

OUR VIEW: Try a dose of kindness

Kindness is July’s character trait for the Orangeburg County Community of Character campaign.

What a glorious, fantastic idea for all in this patriotic month of July.

The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Only more so — every day, 30 days, every single day.

Be kind to every creature in your goings in and goings out.

This means so many good things. Generosity, warm-heartedness, sympathetic understanding, humanity, benevolence, just plain old-fashioned goodness. It means being nice, doing good deeds, graciousness, tender-heartedness consideration.

Think of all the lovely ideas as expressed when you think of kindness. “The milk of human kindness,” “do a good turn,” “go out of your way.” Be considerate, sweet-tempered, amiable, cordial, gentle, thoughtful, attentive, concerned, genuine, agreeable, charitable, altruistic. Think of brotherly and sisterly love, grace, doing good deeds. Having your heart in the right place.

Thoughtful, thoughtful, thoughtful — just pure old love.

Go back and read this again. Teach it to your children. Teach it to yourself. Take a pledge right now: “Every single day I’m going to do something kind for somebody, some animal. Every single day. And I’m going to check on myself every night before I got to sleep.”

“While just the art of being kind is all the sad world needs.” — Wilcox

“Give me but one kind word to think upon.” — Shakespeare

Try a dose of kindness. You might decide it cures what ails you.
