The Orangeburg Chapter of The Links Inc. recently presented a check for $5,000 to Claflin University in support of the educational endowment effort of the Southern Area of The Links Inc.

To set up the endowment, the Southern Area presented a check for $5,400 to Claflin from the funds raised by the Nancy Wilson concert in Charlotte, N.C., in September 2006.

The Southern Area of The Links Inc. raised more than $250,000 with the assistance of the benefit concert, and all proceeds will be used to underwrite scholarship endowments at each of the historically black colleges and universities in its area.

The scholarship endowment initiative has set an agenda designed to promote and advocate academic achievement, economic independence, political empowerment and social responsibility for future leaders. The program has already endowed Bennett College, Spelman College, Bethune-Cookman College, Florida Memorial University, Edward Waters College and Florida A&M University.

Carolyn Sherman, president of the Orangeburg Chapter of The Links Inc., says the chapter "will continue to grow the endowment by contributing at lease $1,500 annually from proceeds raised through the annual White Rose Luncheon."
