SPRINGFIELD - Vandalism at the town park is continuing to be a problem in Springfield.

Springfield Town Council members at their July 14 meeting urged residents to help the town keep watch at the park and report cases of vandalism. The fountain that was broken at the park has been replaced, Mayor Marilyn McCormick reported, and police officers are locking the park at night and reopening it each morning.

McCormick, in other business, asked residents who have complaints about the current cable television provider to call Springfield Town Council to report them. She said the current cable company has not paid the rent due on the building it uses at the town ball field.

The mayor also asked that anyone using the museum clean up the facility after using it.

In addition, McCormick reported that the town’s new annex building should be finished by the end of December or at the latest in January. She said the Trail Walk will be finished by the end of December.

One resident wanted to know why the Clemson University drawings were not going to be used for the Trail Walk. He also expressed his opinion that the engineers should not be the ones to decide if any trees will be cut down for the trail, saying town residents should decide this instead

McCormick said there will be a meeting with the engineers about the Trail Walk and the public will be invited. No decision has yet been made to cut down more trees for the trail, she said.

Also during the meeting, Councilwoman Lydia Lackey reported the new street signs should be ready in a month. The town can keep the old signs, she said. Lackey suggested the town could sell or auction off the old sign to recoup some of the expenses.

In other business:

* Councilman Eddie Lee reported the police department had 54 cases in June.

* Councilwoman Wood reported the fitness center is open and being used. It opens at 8 a.m., she said.

* The town’s General Fund report for June showed a beginning balance of $717.93; income, $42,984.90; expenditures, $20,062.90; ending balance, $23,639.93. The Water and Sewer showed a beginning balance of $1,372.52; income, $15,561.38; expenditures, $14,712.55; ending balance, $2,221.35. The Municipal Fund showed a beginning balance of $10,344.72; income, $12,234.26; expense, $5,036.11; ending balance, $17,542.87. The Frog Jump account showed a beginning balance of $15,369.71; income, $15.53; expenditures, $0; ending balance, $15,385.24.
