Groups push for less mercury from planned S.C. plant

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Environmentalists say South Carolina-owned utility Santee Cooper could reduce the mercury it plans to emit from its proposed $1.25 billion coal-fired power plant in Florence County.

Santee Cooper says it already has cut planned mercury emissions to 57 pounds a year for each of its two planned generators at the plant. Environmentalists say some coal plants emit as little as 1 pound of mercury per year and Santee Cooper should make more cuts.

Two environmental groups and a physician plan to question the company about its planned emissions at a meeting Tuesday in Pamplico.

Santee Cooper also is seeking to build two new nuclear reactors near Columbia in conjunction with South Carolina Electric and Gas.
