'Thanks for the memories'
Monday, July 21, 2008Peggy Walters’ column of June 20, “Remembering good people,” was a great tribute to a great man, Dr. M. Stewart Funderburk Jr.
I, and my family, also had many experiences where he served as our surgeon, and we were impressed not only by his expertise but also by his compassion and caring. We were not “just another number” to him. In my opinion, he was the best.
Not only was Dr. Funderburk a most capable professional, he was our friend -- a true friend whose loyalty and support we never doubted.
He was also very musically talented and shared this gift whenever asked. I spent many happy times accompanying him as he sang.
Johnny Roland and I had the privilege of serving as musicians for Stewart’s memorial service. Because he was a big Frank Sinatra fan, it was an honor to play some of his Sinatra favorites as our final gift of friendship.
We have lost a man whose place cannot be filled. Consider yourself fortunate if he was your doctor or your friend.
Stewart, thanks for the memories, and for caring and sharing.
