Yanks’ deal sends Gardner back to minors
By BRIAN LINDER, T&D Sports Editor Sunday, July 27, 2008BOSTON -- The New York Yankees optioned Holly Hill native Brett Gardner to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Saturday.
The move was made to make room for outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte, both of whom were acquired in a six-player trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates that was finalized Saturday afternoon.
Gardner played in 17 games with the Yankees, batting .153. He was 9-for-59 at the plate with five walks, five stolen bases and seven RBIs. The former Holly Hill Academy, St. George Post 105 and College of Charleston standout’s stay was highlighted by an extra inning, game-winning hit off Boston closer Jonathan Paplebon, July 6.
Gardner was 0-for-3 in Friday’s 1-0 win over Boston. In 80 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he is hitting .287 with three home runs, 29 RBIs and 34 stolen bases.
