Model for how to welcome home the troops
Monday, July 28, 2008Anne Nelson is bringing honor to the men and women of the U.S. military.
For the past four years, she has dedicated her life to assisting injured soldiers and families from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. She has traveled to Brook Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, spent time with the Marine recruits at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, been involved with the Bob Hope LAX USO, spent time with the special operations teams, supported the widows of the fallen and made visits to the wounded at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, as well as traveled to the homes of the combat wounded.
A former television broadcaster, model and fundraiser, Nelson has been blessed to recruit celebrity support from friends in the worlds of television, movies and sports.
As the creative inspiration for Welcome Home, Nelson has provided the lifeline for Angels Within, a tax-exempt organization she founded in 1996. Welcome Home is a television network special she created four years ago. She also created the adjunct AmericanSoldierNetwtork.org.
"All the sacrifice and months away from home can take a toll on any hero. American Soldier Network understands a clear and unmistakable fact that the men and women in uniform are our children, moms, dads, sons and daughters that have answered the call for all of us," Nelson says.
Nelson and her team are raising national awareness and support in three major areas affecting troops: Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, combat wounded and families of the fallen.
Now comes Project Welcome Home. Nelson says, "A work in progress, a work of love. We are healing the wounds of the past and establishing a new attitude toward our returning veterans. At a time when morale and support for war are being pondered, debated and discussed, the unquestionable need for the moral support of our sons and daughters on the front line of war continues."
Project Welcome Home pays tribute to the many men and women of the U.S. military. It salutes all branches of the military and highlights the emotional sacrifice, dedication and drive of soldiers during their terms in Iraq and Afghanistan.
America is asking much of today's warrior. So few are fighting for so many. Anne Nelson is a model. Americans should take notice -- and vow that the experience of returning Vietnam veterans will never be repeated.
As Navy Seal Chief Nick Rocha says, "Her heart for the military is not just lip service. Annie has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Her commitment to the troops has been nothing short of inspirational!"
She says, "The parable The Faith Of The Mustard Seed is exactly what I am living. I am just the vehicle in a much bigger picture to help recognize and appreciate the men and women who selfishly serve and protect each of us blessed to be Americans!"
