DENMARK, S.C. – Major improvements, including possible construction of a traffic circle, are planned for one of the city of Denmark’s major intersections.
S.C. Department of Transportation personnel have been doing survey work at the intersection of U.S. 78 and 321 in Denmark since April, but the actual work may not begin for another year or two, according to the SCDOT.
The narrow turning radius at the intersection has sometimes led to tractor-trailer trucks running up onto sidewalks and sometimes even into buildings over the years, underscoring the need for intersection improvements.
SCDOT Geodetic Tech II Russell Bedenbaugh is part of the survey team that’s currently working in Denmark.
“Basically, we are just locating the road, sidewalks, buildings and utilities around this U.S. 321-U.S. 78 intersection. I’m not sure what they have planned,” Bedenbaugh said. “Our information is sent on to the SCDOT offices with engineers in Columbia. Our information tells them what they have to work around as they make their project plans.”
Mac Vaugh, SCDOT crew chief for preconstruction surveys, says the work order for intersection improvement has personnel surveying from U.S. 78 and every side street that intersects with it in Denmark, from Hampton Street to Holland Street, as well as U.S. 321 and every side street that intersects it, from Byrnes and Richards streets to Highway 70 and Hagood Street.
“We have to research property boundaries for almost 200 parcels both in the courthouse and with our survey out here,” Vaugh said.
