COLUMBIA, S.C. - State regulators are about to consider South Carolina Electric & Gas Company’s request to start work at its Fairfield County plant where it wants to build two new nuclear reactors.

SCE&G has told the Public Service Commission the utility needs to start work now, even though regulators won’t decide before February whether the company can build the reactors and start charging customers for them.

The State newspaper reported Tuesday the Office of Regulatory Services has recommended that SCE&G’s request be approved. The PSC will consider the request Wednesday afternoon.

Tom Clements with Friends of the Earth says the request to start work should be considered with the company’s request to build the reactors.
