S.C. State center to be named after Dr. Webber
Thursday, August 14, 2008The Educational Resource Center at South Carolina State University’s I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium will officially be named the Dr. Clemmie Embly Webber Educational Resource Center during a ceremony next week.
The dedication and naming ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, in the I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium.
Without the efforts of Webber, a former S.C. State professor of science education, the university would not have a planetarium. As plans were being made to construct a museum on S.C. State’s campus, she approached then-President Dr. M. Maceo D. Nance with a proposal for a planetarium.
The Educational Resource Center has been home to several classes, including museum studies and workshops for framing of art. It temporarily houses the artifacts of the James Brown Estate, while the Stanback storage area is being renovated.
In the future, the Educational Resource Center will also serve as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Regional Teacher Resource Center Network for South Carolina, creating a space-related educational hub with workshops offered by Planetarium Manager Dr. Elizabeth Mayo.
“We are thrilled that Dr. Webber is being honored for her contributions to education at S.C. State, especially the planetarium,” Mayo said. “It is appropriate that this important educational science center permanently remind everyone of her importance to S.C. State.”
