MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - A fire broke out on a South Carolina school bus on the first day of class but no one was hurt.

The bus was carrying 25 students to the new Cane Bay High School in Berkeley County Monday.

Guidance counselor Andrew Hirak was behind the bus and saw sparks from the bus’s rear-mounted engine.

Hirak honked his horn and flashed his lights to alert the driver. who pulled over on U.S. Highway 176 and unloaded the students.

Flames consumed the rear of the passenger cabin after the students were evacuated.

The Whitesville Rural Fire Department put out the fire.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported last year that an analysis of school bus maintenance records from 1996 to 2006 identified more than 100 fire-related incidents.
